casting the net wider

I have had a hard time discovering new music since MTV Amp went off the air. Lately, I occasionally hear a neat snippet in a car commercial and in the interstitials at Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim. So, help me find new music, please bookmark some mp3’s with the tag “for:joshua” and I will listen. To make this easier for myself and everyone, del.icio.us now has special support for media.

Bookmarked items in del.icio.us that end in one of a number of filetypes will now automatically get some system tags added. You can use these just like normal tags. RSS feeds that have one of those system tags added will automatically become a rss-with-enclosures file.

While I don’t have an immediate need for these enclosures, I have a strong feeling that I will in the future; probably because it seems so convenient. Thanks!

And what about m3u files (mp3 playlists)?

I don’t know if it makes any sense to add them to the list, but the fact is that the track that I’d recommand is available through a m3u only.

  • Alastair Tse  |  Jun 13 2005 at 8:23 pm

this is promising to be quite a neat feature. one problem with bookmarking video files is that they are usually embedded into the page and there is not direct link to the movie file (see apple trailers page), so i’ve made a quick hack attempt at a bookmarklet that is able to extract the direct link to a video url (http://www.liquidx.net/node/904). anyway, keep up the great work on delicious!

How about adding system:filetype:archive with support for .dmg, .zip, etc.? Then people like me could create ad-hoc appcasts (see http://www.speirs.org/appcasting/).

    Hey, excellent!

I’ve did this a few time ago to play my bookmarked mp3s in an special tag: http://www.leandroardissone.com.ar/code/play.a.licio.us/

It’s a simple PHP script that you give the tags with mp3s in your del.icio.us account and using AJAX makes a single file player or playlist generator.

Now with this, it should be faster.

But no time to modify my sh*t.

If anyone wants the script just contact me. lardissone[great-spam-filter]@gmail.com

actually, it’s quite useless. What we need to do, is start tagging torrent files. This way we will start smart-tagging and sorting the huge database of media files, without burdening on web-site hosts and servers.

This is super wonderful, simply creative. I think going with del.icio.us’ community/open spirit, there should be an automatic system in place for such meta-meta tags to evolve. And a directory or something of these meta-meta tags will be awesome.

Though it looks like you already have this worked out. system namespace is reserved and users can have tags with user namespace created at will (pretty much) and when something becomes quite popular, can be assigned a system namespace.

A wonderful idea of supporting non HTML pages! del.icio.us rocks~~~

This is off topic, because I dunno where else to post this :). I’d like to see an automatic “word stemming” feature in del.icio.us. For example the following page:

    http://del.icio.us/tag_stem/hacking

… will contain all URLs with the tags “hacking”, “hacker”, “hackers”, “hack” & “hacked”.

It’s like an automatic tag bundle system based on dictionary…

  • resuna  |  Jul 2 2005 at 12:48 pm

The problem with tag_stem is… how do you automatically generate the relations? You need to have a bunch of semantic information about things like “hacking implies hacked” and “hacking does not imply hackeysack”. If you’re not going to do that, then there’s no reason to bother about root words, just match wildcards: you could either allow wildcards in tags (tag/hack*) or in searches (search?tag=hack*). . . . .

I’d also like to second the recommendation of audioscrobbler for solving the original problem. :)

    del.icio.us + enclosures = x-casting

So now you can generate a podcast from a del.icio.us feed of entries tagged with, say, system:filetype:mp3. Or, to get a podcast of all del.icio.us audio entries, get this: http://del.icio.us/rss/tag/system:media:audio. You can video-cast, picture-cas…

  • Paul  |  Jul 5 2005 at 12:50 pm

This is slightly off topic for the “special support for media” thread, but here is a feature request.

When publishing, it would be nice for del.icio.us to add a tag if I use a particular tag. For example, I use the tag “vbd”, which to me means “Video-Based Demos”. “vbd” is quick to type, but I am too lazy and too slow a typer to add “screencasting” as an additional tag. So it would be nice if del.icio.us could add “screencasting” whenever I tag something as “vbd”. Obviously, each user may want their own set of mappings.

I think this is an amazing new feature that will surely get people’s attention.

I too share the same concerns as Mark about what happens when the RIAA finds out about this, and I’d also wonder about the legal ramifications of making certain filetypes available via aggregation.

Is this any different from finding mp3s via google?

    http://www.geocities.com/my_haz_runs/

Or is it different (and “worse”) because it makes the data more usable (via rss/podcasting)?

If it ever becomes an issue, I suspect that RIAA proponents will likely argue that del.icio.us is “enabling” piracy, even though the media linked to from del.icio.us is heavily distributed & maybe even copyright-free.

As for the KaZaA kiddies encroaching on del.icio.us. As long as the site layout is kept slim (e.g. not flashy) the kidz won’t catch on.

I also wonder about the potential for abuse. For example, if we know there’s a high likelihood of folks podcasting using http://del.i cio.us/rss/tag/system:filetype:mp3, and the content contained therein is decentralized, wouldn’t it be fairly easy to spread bad stuff just by introducing it into del.icio.us with a certain filetyped link. Maybe it’s low risk with mp3s, but the aforementioned AppCasting could get out of control if someone threw malware into the mix (right?).

    J,

I love the idea about a tag stemming hack to find variations of tags that have the same words, if I understand you correctly.

I made a thorough blog post on this, and how it helps your research time and coverage.

    See here:http://libraryclips.blogsome.com/2005/06/16/tag-searching-wishlist/

    Here is an excerpt:

“…what about having a search mechanism similar to CTRL-F, where it will search according to the string of characters.

So if I search RSS, I will get returns for every tag that has the characters RSS.”
