tags for two

We’ve just begun rolling out support for tagging items for others. To do so, use "for:username" where username is the name of the user you want to send the item to.

You can see items tagged for you at http://del.icio.us/for/ (it’ll redirect to your own page, which other users will not be able to see.)

Some reasons I kinda think this is a bad idea: http://jk3.us/2005/07/09/delicious-tags-for-two/

I would also fear Tag Spam. See the 3 articles from J.Battelle, D. Sullivan & S. Rubel in my blog @ http://media-tech.blogspot.com/2005/07/delicious-introduit-tag-for-two-une.html

(can send them directly if you don’t find them in my french text)

    Del.icio.us Tag For

Social bookmarking service provider del.icio.us now supports “for:username” tag to send the links to another user. It would be useful to push links to those who have no idea how to subscribe to an RSS feed, like your average grannies and c…

Personally, I like being able to filter my incoming bookmark streams. It would be a lot more useful to me to have multiple inboxes. That way, I could make a “from others” feed from just the people I want to see tags from. (And the general case of the new “tagging for two” would be accomplishable by making an inbox that watched all entries tagged for:.)

  • dave  |  Jul 9 2005 at 4:53 pm

If you’ve used “/for:{someusername}” previously, what happens to those bookmarks? Do they become inaccessible unless you’re that particular user?

    del.icio.us tag for two

    del.icio.us: tags for two 新功能,讓你可以直接分享bookmark給同是美味書籤的user,只要將你的bookmark加上tag for:username(接收者的名字),就可以發送這個bookmark給他。

  • liujiyu  |  Jul 10 2005 at 12:04 pm

this is off topic, but is there anyway to filter out duplicates in the main listing and your inbox? whenever there’s a flock of people linking to a new “hot” site, it get kinda annoying.

  • Michael Arrington  |  Jul 10 2005 at 1:18 pm

Josh, Great new feature. We posted about it at techcrunch. Have you considered making it a user option as to whether or not this tag will be public? I’d like to be able to see what people are recommending for others, if they let me.

I really like how this service lets you see who is sending you each link. I think that this would actually make fighting tag spam quite manageable. Provide a “this is spam” link next to each entry in an account’s “for:” page. Just a few people clicking these links immediately makes the referrer a likely spambot suspect. Since link referral is not nearly as important as email delivery, you can afford to be absolutely brutal in combating abuse. Just two “this is spam” clicks in a 48 hour period for a referrer earns that person a one week moratorium from using the “for:someone” tag. Five of these “this is spam” clicks in a 48 hour period means a deactivated account as well as grounds for expunging all of that referrers “for:someone” tags from the server, so as not to bother anyone else. I’d like to see someone make a profit under that model.

    Well done, Joshua.

I don’t think I like the new for: tag much. When I was using for: on my own before this new implementation, my intent was to bring a bookmark to an extra level of attention for a person, but not to prevent others from seeing the bookmark as well. I’ve also used it for people who know me offline, who find my username difficult to remember - I’ve told them to just use for: with my first name, confident that I’d find the link anyway. I’ve also occasionally browsed things tagged for: someone else - such as music files tagged for:joshua after http://blog.del.icio.us/blog/2005/06/casting_the_net.html . If you decide to keep the for: tag, might I suggest an option whereby the recipient(s) can remove their for: tag from a bookmark, so as to make the bookmark public?

  • randfish  |  Aug 5 2005 at 4:59 pm

This new feature can help make del.icio.us more of a community site and system - is that the general goal of the project? I’d love to see a big del.icio.us community, as the social aspects of tagging and sharing are already promoting it.
