people who like recommendations also like…
We’ve released the new recommendation engine. If you have more than ten urls saved in a tag, you will be offered several urls as well as other people’s tags that the system thinks you will be interested in. The URL pages also now offer the chance to see other related URLs.

You are a grandmaster of the understatement ;). It would be interesting to hear a little about the heuristics of the recommendations (are they based on overall popularity of links, or on the similarity of the tagging behaviour of users,..)

This is excellent. Would it be possible in the future to configure the threshhold?
Also, does the engine take into account combinations? Like, if someone tagged a website as both ‘fun’ and ’sex’, I might not want to get it as a recommendation in my ‘fun’ tag (especially if I’m at work, etc).

Will there be an api for retrieving “URLs like this one” (perhaps either system-wide or within your own bookmarks)?

hans — yes, we plan to allow access to other people’s public data, but I need to get a way to do throttling in place; we currently do not throttle any access to your own account.

“recommendations” is a great feature. Is there a way of getting rid of unwanted recommendations? If not, what about a special tag “non-recommended”, so that no URL I tagged as “not-recommended” will ever be recommended to me.

In addition to my previous post (posted as “Piotr”), are you planning rss access to recommendations?
rashmi | Aug 19 2005 at 3:19 am
How are you computing the recommendations? Is this collaborative filtering, or some other way of calculating related links.

I’m impressed by the recommendations feature, though like several others I don’t really understand exactly how it works. However, the issue I want to raise is this. Theoretically, if you bookmark more than ten URLs with the same tag, you get a list of recommendations. That happens in most cases. I don’t get the reason why it does not happen in the case of one of my tags - psychoanalysis - where I now have, I think, thirteen entries. The recommendations link is there alright. But when I click it I don’t get any results. I find this a bit difficult to understand, since clicking on the link above - psychoanalysis from all users - produces a pretty long list.

magictongue - the recommendations engine takes a few days to start picking stuff up. you should see things show up soon.

I would love to see the threshold at 5 instead of 10 - I don’t have that many links under each tag :-)
