We rock (part 2)

We recently added a way to play back mp3 links posted to del.icio.us without leaving the page or browser. Many of you loved this solution and asked if you could put it on your blog or website. I now have an answer for you – yes you can! PlayTagger is a simple javascript you include on your site that automatically makes any mp3 link playable on your page. It also includes a link that allows visitors to easily post the mp3 to del.icio.us.

The PlayTagger code and example are located here: del.icio.us/help/playtagger

P.S. Sorry this took so long. We have actually had the code done for two weeks, but choosing the name proved harder than we could have imagined. Some names that didn’t make the cut: playDots, medialicious, mmmmMp3, del.icio.us mp3 player, ClickNipples, etc.

    lol~ I like ya P.S :D

Also, i have noticed a change in layout too. Keep it up man! It’s even neater and slicker now without applying skin thru greasemonkey now.

    *thumbs up*

My very first thought is this - will this actually encourage stealing of bandwidth by encouraging users to tag and play MP3 directly from their sources?

Is it okay if I take the java script and modify it a little? Maybe change the graphics for the play/stop button, that sort of stuff.

  • Philipp Keller  |  Nov 22 2005 at 9:23 am

Am I to dumb to use this..?

I tried it on my mp3-page (http://www.pui.ch/phred/creation/) but it doesn’t seem to work.

I quickly scanned the javascript source and it searchs for all anchor tags with “.mp3″ at its end, so a few of my links would qualify for that. But the images don’t show up..

  • chrys  |  Nov 22 2005 at 9:32 am

phillipp: try adding the javascript below the body tag and it should work.

you guys do rock! (although i kinda like the sound of “clicknipples” myself…)

  • Steven V  |  Nov 22 2005 at 9:59 am

Very nice. I definitely have to try this out

  • Stephen Clay  |  Nov 22 2005 at 10:36 am

Awesome. It’d be nice to have a way to mark mp3s (or a whole page) to not be affected by the script, maybe via a ‘no_playtagger’ className on document.body or the link. A nice feature for site owners and greasemonkey authors who’d like to prevent each mp3 getting two play buttons :)

  • ernst  |  Nov 22 2005 at 10:55 am

So I tried the script on my site and playback seems slightly slow. Now, it may be hard to tell with the tracks I have linked to, but it is, trust me….

  • Andrew Disley  |  Nov 22 2005 at 11:32 am

Fantasic! Nice work guys, I like the new layout also.

    GM script: Del.icio.us MP3 Playtagger

Del.icio.us announced a cool script, named playtagger, to add a tiny mp3 playback button and a tag button. The script will alter the onload() event of the HTML body document and insert the playable link to any URL point…

I have a trouble in my del.icio.us after updated the system yesterday. Now, I’m not able to use the Chinese tags “传播” and ” 网络传播” when I add bookmarks. Please look at problem tags

what the hell happened to the ’subscribe’ link in every page? it’s crucial!

  • Daniel  |  Nov 22 2005 at 10:26 pm

I notice that when you are del.icio.us’ing a page via the bookmarklet, when you type in the beginning of a tag (like: softw) and then hit the Enter key, it doesn’t finish the tag, but submits the data. This is very awkward from a long time of hitting enter after typing 4 letters of each tag. I would very much like that restored.

  • Philipp Keller  |  Nov 23 2005 at 2:18 am

Tim: Thank you very much for helping me out. Now my mp3s play decently with your player. This is very very cool..

Testing the new del.icio.us playtagger - easy streamed audio

This is a test of the new shared javascript from del.icio.us which enhances mp3 links with a lightweight flash object to play the audio, streamed, in the browser, in your page. The enhancement also places a tag-me link to post the mp3 to delicious.

There’s a problem with the Flash app opening the following URL. It plays at double-speed.

    http://mshook.python-hosting.com/joho/20050920-NPR-ATC-Tagging-Joho-David-Weinberger.mp3

Also, the play button doesn’t show up on the URL search page:

  • brainbox  |  Nov 25 2005 at 7:17 am

    great tool! good luck!

  • computerdude33  |  Nov 25 2005 at 9:50 am

You should make a “Powered by PlayTagger” button.

  • mostafa  |  Nov 26 2005 at 7:56 am

Dan, I wonder if you can make a bookmarklet that would include this Javascript in the head of a page you are visiting.

This way when I visit a page that directly links to mp3s, I would only have to click the bookmarklet to get this small tiny blue play button beside each link.

One more thing, how about greasmonkey ?

  • mostafa  |  Nov 26 2005 at 8:00 am

Oops, I just realised that it exists. http://del.icio.us/help/morebuttons

  • koseki  |  Nov 26 2005 at 9:17 pm

Thanks for recent MP3 support! I like it.

    I created “Post MP3 to del.icio.us” bookmarklet.

If you interested in, please try this.

  • Nick Doty  |  Dec 9 2005 at 10:51 pm

An awesome feature, but it can be problematic for large MP3 files (which it seems the SWF file has to load all of before beginning to play, or before returning control of the browser to the user). Is there anyway that it could be updated to fix this and play audio even as it loads the rest? Just a thought.

  • Don Kittle  |  Dec 14 2005 at 5:34 pm

I tried it on this band’s page and the playback makes the singer sound like a chipmunk…

    http://www.ayria.com/music.html

  • Ashley  |  Dec 14 2005 at 11:27 pm

    About things sounding like chipmunks:

    (from podOmatic’s FAQ)

Macromedia’s Flash plugin has a bug, resulting in it only being able to play audio files encoded in a multiple of 11.025 KHz. So 11.025, 22.050, or 44.1 all sound good, but rates like 8KHz or 24KHz sound like chipmunks (or nothing at all). The media will still sound fine when downloaded to most mp3 players, and it will be fine when played on a desktop application, but the browser-based play button will play the audio at the wrong speed. We recommend encoding speech at 22.050KHz mono and music at 44.1KHz stereo.

  • anon  |  Dec 17 2005 at 5:28 pm

PlayTagger is really useful! But for some reason, it plays much faster than it should; The Chipmunks are invading my website!

  • anon  |  Dec 17 2005 at 5:30 pm

Hm… Never mind, problem resolved; didn’t see Ashley’s post.

  • Murli  |  Jan 8 2006 at 11:19 pm

Have a feature request and didn’t know where to post it, so here goes :)

I was wondering if you could implement a feature by which users could post an (optional) image thumbnail along with their URL? For example, if I was saving the Google homepage as one of my favourites, I might use the URL of the Google logo as my thumbnail image.

I’m looking to use this feature to save URLs of books on Amazon along with their cover image, so that I can then display this on my website. But I imagine this could be used in many other ways as well.

    Thanks for listening!

  • Marshall  |  Jan 24 2006 at 6:09 am

I’m trying to use the WordPress Plugin form of Playtagger but its not working correctly. Anyone having issues with this plug-in?

Its not displaying the play button next to the MP3 file….

  • Cristian  |  Jan 24 2006 at 11:43 am

Great feature! I love how you do things here. I’m guessing that future releases would include other audio formats like OGG and video too? Would be really cool. :)

  • Kai Carver, Paris, France  |  Jan 30 2006 at 11:20 am

Hi, to complete Ashley’s comment, there’s another bug: if your mp3 file name has accented characters (e.g. “Kling Glöckchen Kling.mp3″, “Pirouette Cacahuète.mp3″), the mp3 won’t play. It might even make Firefox crash. (It looks like QuickTime’s plugin in IE doesn’t like accents either, by the way).

The workaround for webmasters is simple: just don’t use any accented chars in your mp3 file names. ASCII rules.

Thanks for a nice little feature!

  • Det  |  Mar 7 2006 at 9:29 am

^ This bug need to be fixed

  • Aaron Hamilton  |  Mar 28 2006 at 1:38 pm

I love what you’re doing here, but del.icio.us is quite buggy so I think it should be considered beta… and I think you need a failsafe way for people to email you - your javascript mail routine says my emil client is not set up properly, but can you please provide us with a plain old email address we can use to contact you? Even better would be a bug reporting email account.

I found some bugs in your bundles feature - as I’m moving thing into and out of bundles weird stuff is happening - like an entire bundle will disappear. And then old bundles with nothing in them are reappearing. Some of it may be caused by browser caching but other stuff is just odd. You really need to look at this because it’s very annoying. Thanks!

  • Ahmad  |  Mar 29 2006 at 9:10 pm

    good luck

  • Luis  |  Apr 15 2006 at 12:08 pm

    Hi,

Managed to change the play and stop buttons after looking at Melodiefabriek (thanks for the idea ;-). I think you should explain how to do this on your site. just my 2 cents…

you can see my results here: http://www.iberoamericamusic.com/
