Jan 20 2006

finally

After a whole lot of work, we’re finally ready to migrate the main website to a new facility on Saturday, January 21st at 12 midnight EST. The site should dissapear only briefly as we switch. Some features, such as tag pages and feeds have already been running on the new hardware for a few days.

We’re moving to more and bigger hardware (we lost a number of machines in our previous power outages.) I’m looking forward to moving out of damage-control mode and continuing to roll out new features and functionality.

Update: We’ve done the migration. We’re working on a few minor issues but most stuff works.

Update: Tagrolls are fixed. Still working on the intersection issues.

Keep on. I cross my fingers 4 U.

Hope U’ll overcome and rule the WebBase-Bookmark area.

  • Philipp Keller  |  Jan 21 2006 at 6:29 am

Wish you good luck. You’ve proven that you know what you’re doing with the switch of the RSS-feeds to the new facilities nobody has really noticed..

I think delicious will be brighter than ever.

  • Cote'  |  Jan 21 2006 at 9:54 am

    Good luck!

I notice since the power problems, I cannot use a request using multi popular tags (ie: http://del.icio.us/popular/usa+tourism).

It was a very useful way to find new and revelant sites.

Is it temporary unavalaible or did you remove it definitely?

  • joshua  |  Jan 21 2006 at 11:40 pm

    Topinambeur: This never worked.

  • Greg  |  Jan 22 2006 at 1:56 am

    Hi -

Last week one could use the keyword “tag” to make a request of the whole community (rather than an individual account). It appears to have turned this off for JSON feeds …

Compare these two requests for everyone’s posts tagged “freshtags”:

    http://del.icio.us/tag/freshtags

    — (in constrast with) —

    http://del.icio.us/feeds/json/tag/freshtags

Last week, both would return a set of posts. This week, only the former (HTML) request will, while the JSON feed is left languishing :-(

Is this a result of the upgrade? Can we expect normal behaviour to resume, or is there a different way of getting this list?

I ask because I have hacks that rely on this feature …

    Cheers,

    -Greg.

    http://blogfresh.blogspot.com/2006/01/freshtags-v-05.html

  • joshua  |  Jan 22 2006 at 2:03 am

I don’t think this ever actually worked. It’s certainly not in the documentaiton. Are you sure?

  • Greg  |  Jan 22 2006 at 2:17 am

Do you mean “it never worked for JSON” or “it never worked at all”?

It currently still works for html and rss, but not JSON. (ie http://del.icio.us/rss/tag/freshtags)

I guess it was an undocumented feature. I was testing it extensively most of last week and intermittently the week before on dozens of differents tags.

It sure would be nice to get it back … :-)

    Cheers,

    -Greg.

Are the RSS feeds / linkrolls one of the things which needs ironing out? I use the linkrolls to feed the sidebars of not only my blog but my main site and all the feeds are done (which gives me a very empty sidebar!).

  • stefano.marzorati  |  Jan 22 2006 at 7:27 am

The code of tagrolls don’t run!

  • Greg  |  Jan 22 2006 at 8:30 am

Yeah, looks like it’s missing a semicolon just after the JSON object definition in the various tagroll/linkroll scripts. RSS seems okay. I wonder if it’s related to the JSON-only issue I reported above?

On the plus side, FreshTags is working fine. If you want something to list out your tags/links in your sidebar in the interim, check it out (click on my name below).

  • Mags  |  Jan 22 2006 at 8:45 am

    Thanks Greg!

As I only got around to putting all the delicious linkrolls onto my site last weekend I think I’ll leave them running on empty for now and hope the problem is quickly solved. But thanks for an alternate option.

  • ik80  |  Jan 22 2006 at 8:47 am

i’m using the link rolls as a main source of my website (for Links and Audio section), but its offline for some time now (as already noted above). I would love to continue using it this way.

    http://iuri.art.br/links.php

    thanks in advance joshua

  • Richard  |  Jan 22 2006 at 8:50 am

What can I do with the “use minimum: 1, 2, 5″?

    Thanks!

  • Hazelip  |  Jan 22 2006 at 8:59 am

Tag intersections are still not working, and yes, they used to work Joshua. A couple of examples:

    http://del.icio.us/rss/tag/system:filetype:mp3+funny

    http://del.icio.us/tag/mp3+politics

    http://del.icio.us/tag/comics+indy

    etc.

When is this functionality going to be restored?

  • Hazelip  |  Jan 22 2006 at 9:00 am

Fucking hell. How about a carriage return in the comments?

  • Robin  |  Jan 22 2006 at 9:07 am

Seems like the javascript to embed a tagcloud isn’t working either.

  • dark.tristan  |  Jan 22 2006 at 9:12 am

my taggroll also doesn’t work.. there’s a semicolon missing in javascript.

  • Fedquip  |  Jan 22 2006 at 9:17 am

I was a big fan of the link rolls and Tag rolls. I used a massive link roll on my sidebar and it now sits empty.. Is this going to return? or should I keep an eye on this post?

I also used the link rolls. My JSON - http://del.icio.us/help/json linkroll is working, however the other type - http://del.icio.us/help/linkrolls , doesnt seem to be working.. again will this still be availible? Should I watch this blog for updates?

  • Hazelip  |  Jan 22 2006 at 9:52 am

Hmm…it looks like generic tag intersections are indeed working. But, trying to intersect a tag with a filetype tag isn’t, when it used to. I had a few in my podcatcher working just fine, but now…nada. What gives, Joshua?

  • Aaron  |  Jan 22 2006 at 10:02 am

I almost cancelled my blog last week, as I was so impressed with del.icio.us. Glad I thought better of it.

I look forward to linkrolls being restored.

  • ik80  |  Jan 22 2006 at 10:11 am

    ok, i’m using JSON now.

Would be nice to know which one is more stable:

    http://del.icio.us/help/json or http://del.icio.us/help/linkrolls

  • joshua  |  Jan 22 2006 at 10:34 am

json/tag/* never worked. The other json/linkroll stuff should be fixed today. I am trying to figure what is going on with tag intersections, but it is much more complicated.

  • samir  |  Jan 22 2006 at 12:21 pm

    argh.. this is inconvinient.

  • Aaron  |  Jan 22 2006 at 1:14 pm

I recommend removing all javascript pointing to del.icio.us, as my blog wouldn’t load.

Wait for this blog to be updated with the great news.

  • stefano.marzorati  |  Jan 22 2006 at 1:21 pm

    TAGROLLS

Copy and paste this code into your hypertext:

    Well!

    …….

    Done!

Oh my god! My taggroll also doesn’t work! :O

At least you change the code, if work….

  • Mags  |  Jan 22 2006 at 2:13 pm

‘The other json/linkroll stuff should be fixed today.’

Thanks for keeping us informed. Will have a beer and watch Desperate Housewives whilst you struggle… ;)

  • Christine Bush  |  Jan 22 2006 at 3:35 pm

I’ve been without linkrolls for a day or two also. I have every confidence you’ll sort it all out in short order and invite patience from us all.

  • tim  |  Jan 22 2006 at 5:56 pm

linkrolls & tagrolls should be working again… apologies for the breakage.

  • Greg  |  Jan 22 2006 at 6:02 pm

Good news about the link rolls being fixed today. I can confirm that json/tag/* DID work - it may have been a side effect, it may have gone unnoticed, but it was working. I built this feature into my homepage (http://ghill.customer.netspace.net.au/) with FreshTags and had it running since around 13/1. It stopped working in the last 48 hours. If delicious no longers wishes to suppport this - fine. But, please, don’t say it never worked.

  • joshua  |  Jan 22 2006 at 9:51 pm

Looks like the json/tag/* stuff was released accidentally. We never announced it and may not support it going forward.

  • Samir  |  Jan 22 2006 at 10:09 pm

It looks fixed now.. and it seems to be pretty fast. Congrats.

  • Greg  |  Jan 22 2006 at 10:27 pm

Nice accident! I found it very useful.

Can we assume you will continue supporting rss/tag/* and /tag/* in any case?

  • Mags  |  Jan 23 2006 at 4:34 am

Thanks for getting the rolls back up.

  • tim  |  Jan 23 2006 at 7:56 am

    greg, yes. those won’t disappear.

  • Greg  |  Jan 23 2006 at 8:39 am

Thanks, Tim. Will have to look into coding with RSS feeds for future releases.

  • Matthew Price  |  Jan 23 2006 at 10:50 am

Sweet, great to hear that the migration went well! This time use a surge protector and a UPS (kidding!).

  • digdag  |  Jan 23 2006 at 5:03 pm

Looks like you guys downgraded( I’m not talking about Yahoo takeover - which begins the end of delicious anyways.). Nothing shows up the first time on firefox - need to refresh atleast once, just to see the page. Most pages take massive amounts of time to load now.

Very frustrating. Hopefully I’ll be able to export my bookmarks as soon as a better service comes along.

    Good luck!

  • Samir  |  Jan 23 2006 at 7:21 pm

I agree, this upgrade now seems to have gone in the other direction. It has been on and off all day long. It would be nice to know when things might normalize!

    Thanks,

    Samir

finally … yet another outage … again?

  • Jez  |  Jan 24 2006 at 7:18 am

    hurrah!

(that is of course iff [sic] the site remains stable.)

  • Greg  |  Jan 24 2006 at 7:23 am

koichiwb - I think this technically counts as a continuation of the initial outage, just punctuated by a few working hours. To satisfy yourself that you’re not going nuts, try this link: http://www.webperf.org/breakdown.html?URL=http://del.icio.us/

  • STML  |  Jan 24 2006 at 7:25 am

There’s a real problem with using del.icio.us in Europe because it seems to go down every night at the moment and not come up again until the US West Coast gets in to work - which is the late afternoon our time…

  • koichiwb  |  Jan 24 2006 at 7:51 am

Greg, thanks. I tried it and got 502 status in the output.

  • booyaa  |  Jan 24 2006 at 8:00 am

i think the move to y.a.hoo is a good idea. means they’ll have more 24/7 staff. to be honest i can live without del.icio.us for a few days. growth/scaling is always a problem with popular services.

    keep r0xin joshua and co!

  • STML  |  Jan 24 2006 at 8:01 am

Greg: I personally, as I am sure does everybody else, appreciate the service/assistance from del.icio.us and FreshTags, but calling us “whingers” on the Freshblog seems a little unfair…

  • eddie  |  Jan 24 2006 at 8:41 am

How much longer until it will be back up?

  • Matt  |  Jan 24 2006 at 9:08 am

All I get is a blank white page…what a shame. Could you guys who run this thing put up a post to say what’s going on?

  • Greg  |  Jan 24 2006 at 9:13 am

STML - sorry if any offense was taken. At the risk of using the Humpty-Dumpty defence, I don’t mean “whinging” in a derogatory or inflammatory sense (I use “whining” or “sooking” for that). Whinging is more a sort of light-hearted (yet ultimately ineffective) venting. Perhaps like “griping”. My own posts about support for JSON feeds (above) are good examples of “whinging”. :-)

  • Dennis  |  Jan 24 2006 at 9:30 am

Oh I just hate it when del.icio.us goes down, especially since i have been recommending the site to some peers. And now they are complaining where are my bookmarks!! I understand there are issues, but I have seen more and more problems lately….hopefully this isnt a sign of things to come. Good luck Joshua in getting everything working again.

  • Alexandre Roche  |  Jan 24 2006 at 9:45 am

Come on guys… we can make this work.

It’s such a light site… in a perfect world it would load instantly.

    A lot of the time I have to re-request a page…

I thought Yahoo!’s servers were better than this.

    Alexandre

  • sean  |  Jan 24 2006 at 9:49 am

seriously. yahoo buys konfabulator and immediately the mac support for what used to be a mac app starts spiraling down. now yahoo buys delicious and it’s been down a half dozen times for extended periods in the past month. what the? this is getting stupid.

  • C9  |  Jan 24 2006 at 9:52 am

Sean don’t jump to conclusions. Konfab’s idea was stolen by Apple and that started the rocky road of deterioration. The Yahoo connection is not the cause here. You guys just don’t know what it takes to run a site of 300k people and thousands of sites doing mad queries per second. This is an engineering feat.

    -a

  • Elana  |  Jan 24 2006 at 10:25 am

It would just be nice to see some messages when the site’s down from the admin to let us know they know it’s down and they’re working on it. I haven’t had much interaction with the outages before last night when I was trying to share some information and the page kept blanking out. Now I’m trying to test a script to grab my links into my Wordpress blog and I’m errorring out all over the place. It took me some serious Google searching to find the link to this blog (now I have it, I’ll bookmark it!) for ANY information about this whatsoever. It’s rather disheartening. I know it’s only 7:30 am on the west coast, but the east coast is up and running and Europe is almost ready for dinner!

  • sean  |  Jan 24 2006 at 10:28 am

    elana, i agree.

c9, it used to be an engineering feat, now it’s just often down, and since it’s a bookmark site, it MATTERS MUCH when it’s down.

  • joshua  |  Jan 24 2006 at 10:47 am

I’m working on it. It’s back up but popular and RSS are down. Working on that now.

  • k  |  Jan 24 2006 at 10:56 am

could a review of recent incidents come up with a practise in the event of recurring events: e.g. first open a new blog entry “yes, it’s down” (tagged with system-service) then an update when available “it’s because of x/y/z - expected back in x min/hrs”. Hopefully dear delicious won’t be down again, it is nice to know the status, whether it’s a planned outgage, a hiccup or full blown surgery :)

  • Will  |  Jan 24 2006 at 10:59 am

    What’s up with http://del.icio.us/popular ?

  • Mark  |  Jan 24 2006 at 11:08 am

Yeah a message on the main page with outage info would be a good one, with a link to here for details. Been having trouble all day getting through and some info would be good.

  • Elana  |  Jan 24 2006 at 11:09 am

I personally like Dreamhost’s status page (http://status.dreamhost.com). It’s not connected to their servers and when they had/have a major outage, they’re quick to update and let users know what’s up.

  • no  |  Jan 24 2006 at 11:26 am

It’s NOT back up. At least not here in Europe. I agree with Elana, some more informations would always be nice. I’d like more blog entries at all, not only during the down-periods.

Thank you, thank you anyway, joshua & team.

  • Mags  |  Jan 24 2006 at 12:54 pm

FWIW, Flickr and blogger also run their status blogs on seperate servers so that an outage doesn’t leave the users stranded… (and yes, another European here)

  • Aaron  |  Jan 24 2006 at 1:02 pm

Yeah, status updates on external servers would be welcome. Having to keep removing javascript temporarily has maybe ended up being permanent, at least for me.

  • 8928  |  Jan 24 2006 at 1:08 pm

when is the import feature going live????

and will del.icio.us and yahoo bookmarks/my web are going to be different services???

  • max  |  Jan 24 2006 at 3:32 pm

This blog is hosted in an entirely different facility than the main site. It should be available (barring a simultaenous outage of the company hosting this blog) even when we are having troubles with the main site.

  • Chris Gwynne  |  Jan 24 2006 at 3:36 pm

  • gms8994  |  Jan 24 2006 at 4:02 pm

Any reason that sign-ups are erroring as well? I’ve had friends try several different usernames, and the system always returns ‘username in use’.

  • Hazelip  |  Jan 24 2006 at 7:44 pm

This is just covered in teh awesome…

Filetype intersections still aren’t working. The rss feeds with enclosures still aren’t working, and now, not much is working.

    Nice. Real nice.

  • zodiac  |  Jan 25 2006 at 5:45 am

the service seems to be up again - but PLEASE change your information policy! don’t let us uninformed guessing whats going on! That is truly the worse option (see some good books on PR for it). I really appreciate that you give us the service for free, and we all know that problems can hit you unexpected, but DO inform your customers! No information on whats happening, why its happening, and when we could expect the service back up and running - this simply sucks.

  • Hazelip  |  Jan 25 2006 at 6:43 am

So, about those tag intersection RSS feeds with enclosures..?

  • Elana  |  Jan 25 2006 at 10:14 am

It seems everything is working fine. My del.icio.us script for Wordpress ran just fine last night, thankfully. I had to force run it for the night before.

  • joshua  |  Jan 25 2006 at 1:47 pm

We’re building some more servers to run the intersections now - we’re just getting overwhelmed at the moment.

  • Elana  |  Jan 25 2006 at 5:10 pm

    And it’s down again…

  • joshua  |  Jan 26 2006 at 2:28 am

argh — very subtle bug. ok. user tag intersections have been moved to their own server. i’m rebuilding the main tag intersections now. the media intersections tickled a very complicated but but i think i’ve fixed it. everything is rebuilding now and should be repaired in a few hours.

  • Hazelip  |  Jan 26 2006 at 5:58 am

    It’s mostly fixed.

This works now, and thank you.: http://del.icio.us/rss/tag/system:filetype:mp3+funny

    This, does not: http://del.icio.us/rss/tag/system:filetype:mp3+HazelipCast

The last one is for my own use when I find individual audio files to check out later.

  • joshua  |  Jan 26 2006 at 12:40 pm

huh. ok, looking into it now.

  • joshua  |  Jan 26 2006 at 12:44 pm

btw, http://del.icio.us/rss/hazelip/system:filetype:mp3 currently works. http://del.icio.us/rss/hazelip/system:filetype:mp3+HazelipCast ought to as well (if not, will be fixed shortly)

  • Stephen  |  Jan 26 2006 at 1:06 pm

  • joshua  |  Jan 26 2006 at 1:15 pm

thanks steven. we’ve been working hard on stabilizing everything. the new hardware is much faster and we’ve split out some parts to their own boxes for speed.

  • Chloe  |  Jan 26 2006 at 8:36 pm

    del.icio.us isn’t reachable from 72.232…It resolves to 206.190.56.150 but isn’t pingable…

  • Hazelip  |  Jan 27 2006 at 6:22 am

http://del.icio.us/rss/hazelip/system:filetype:mp3+HazelipCast works, but the URL http://del.icio.us/rss/tag/system:filetype:mp3+HazelipCast still doesn’t, and it doesn’t make any sense. There’s nothing user-specific about it, it’s not like it’s out of my in-box or anything.

  • Rob  |  Jan 27 2006 at 11:12 am

    Really cool ;)

  • joshua@del.icio.us  |  Jan 28 2006 at 10:01 am

Ok. There’s a bug in the way system:filetype:mp3 (and bretheren) is handled. I’ll put in a fix which will go out on the next release. In the meantime i’ve reset the timestamp on the HazelipCast tag.

  • Samir  |  Jan 29 2006 at 12:06 pm

I just want to say that everything is working and is faster then before the upgrade work. Of course that was the goal.

hey, i have a suggestion for the tag entry screen: by default, put the cursor focus in the tag field. one less click feels like a lot when you are moving, reading, tagging quickly.

um, very new to this, I’m trying to add a load of favourites, and they register and appear on the favourites page as normal, but when I add some more, some of them disappear completely (tag words et al). Is this a glich to do with problems with the transfer or am I missing something. Is there a limit to the number of favourites you can add a day?

    Hi,

I know it’s not really the place to ask but….

    I have three blogs:

    http://richmondtransits.blogspot.com/

    http://transmanches.blogspot.com/

    http://richmondtransits.blogspot.com/

Two are in French and one’s in English (apparently :-)

And my question is: how can I show a tag cloud of all tags associating with another tag?

For instance, I would like a “food” tag cloud, and thought one way I could do this would be to tag all my “food” bookmarks with “foodings” (incidentally the name of my foodie blog) and display all tags relating to bookmarks also containing the “foodings” tag.

Has anyone got some ideas on this? (or is that a daft question?)

  • -  |  Feb 6 2006 at 10:06 am

del.icio.us is a great idea but the site goes down often and the RSS feeds have been broken for weeks.

  • hlp  |  Feb 7 2006 at 10:57 am

When are you going to put the import feature again?? Until finished the integration with yahoo?

  • matthew  |  Feb 7 2006 at 1:33 pm

Just by way of follow up to my whinging above, those of you disappointed that delicious turned off the generic JSON feeds (ie feeds/json/tag/*) may be interested in this hack:

i exported my del.icio.us to Yahoo! MyWeb and used thatfor a while. I wanna go back to using good old del.icio.us again, but the import function isn’t working. Do you know when that will get fixed?

    Thanks!

  • hlp  |  Feb 14 2006 at 10:22 am

I nice feature would be to have class equivalence of tags. For example, spanish is my mother language and I tag in spanish. But I work in english. So in many cases I have to choose between tagging in english or spanish. How about said to del.icio.us that algorithm=algoritmo. So I can tag with one of them and it get tagged with both, or something like that.

When import says “switched off for a few days”, and now it’s a few months, and no new blog posting, updates, features etc…I think I’m off to join everyone else moving over to Blinklist….

  • Caso Patologico  |  Feb 16 2006 at 3:06 am

I have a problem with the tags several days ago:

http://del.icio.us/patologico26/blogroll show “No items” however i have 62 items with that tag.

    Same problem with json.

I have only 2 tags, both have this problem.

    Can i fix some way?

    Regards

    Mario

  • Tristan  |  Feb 17 2006 at 3:45 am

Why isn’t import functioning? Few days? WTF? My friend has been complaining about this for more than month! How can a normal user jump from regular bookmarks to del.icio.us, if he can’t import?

  • Flaksnack  |  Feb 17 2006 at 8:56 am

Second the comment on Import - have been very interested in using this, but can’t really gauge its usefulness with a few random manually inserted URLs of my own. When is Import coming back?!

    Thanks.

  • mhp  |  Feb 18 2006 at 11:47 pm

I’ve had some issues with intersection tags after updating the a) Description, b) adding tags, c) both.

For my personal listing, the entries all exist, but when I did (a) and (c) it was delayed globally, but in a 10-60min it appeared. When I did (b), adding a single tag to an entry, it shows up under my personal listing, but not globally (after 8 hours).

Contact me for more details if you want them.

  • Toast  |  Feb 19 2006 at 6:05 am

Well, after a few days with Blinklist, it’s like a breath of fresh air!

I’m fairly sure I now believe the rumours that Yahoo bought del.icio.us to kill it off - blinklist is SO much better, import works, private bookmarks etc.

del was good once, but it’s gone totally stagnant since Yahoo bought it.

  • sotn3m  |  Feb 20 2006 at 1:14 pm

after a looong time of waiting for the _import_ function to work I decided to try the blinklist instead. Very happy with it so far :) there is a point in saying that Yahoo wants to kill del.icio.us…

  • darley  |  Feb 20 2006 at 7:14 pm

I have a problem. Using Firefox 1.5.0.1 and cannot access anything having to do with del.icio.us. I can access it in IE. I have the Firefox plug-in as well. Using that, all I get is the Yahoo! 404 Page. I can access, this page however. Guess it is something with the subdomain. Anyone have any ideas?? Please help!

  • highroller  |  Feb 22 2006 at 3:37 pm

    down again ….???

  • marjar  |  Feb 23 2006 at 8:26 am

    hehe

  • Michael  |  Feb 23 2006 at 11:40 pm

I love this tool and am sharing it with everyone I know. I installed the Firefox extension and it works great… except… it does not show the list of “my tags” so I can click on my existing tags. When I use the buttons (instead of the Firefox extension) the list of my tags is shown. Is this considered a known problem? Will the Firefox extension be updated to include my existing tags.

  • Dave  |  Feb 24 2006 at 9:47 pm

Is the Import feature ever going to be enabled??? Thanks

  • b.art  |  Feb 28 2006 at 3:05 pm

Is there ever going to be an official version of foxy.licio.us (sp?)

  • Caso Patologico  |  Mar 1 2006 at 2:03 am

I still have this problem with the tags several days ago:

http://del.icio.us/patologico26/blogroll show “No items” however i have 62 items with that tag. Same problem with json. I have only 2 tags, both have this problem.

Can i fix some way? Anyone can help me? I’m in trouble?
