do you have anything to declare?

We’ve just rolled out our import tool. You can now import your existing bookmarks from Firefox, IE, Safari, Opera, or anything that supports the traditional Netscape bookmark file format. If you like, we can even give you a bit of a jump-start by automatically applying the most popular tags. To try it out, click on “settings”, then “import”.

For most users the import is pretty quick. If you have a large number of browser bookmarks it might take some time to process; once it starts, you can leave the import page and come back later to check the status.

We took our time on this one because we wanted to make sure that your privacy was protected. After all, your browser bookmarks and favorites have been private up till now, and nobody wants to see all those Brangelina articles you saved, anyway. So when you import your bookmarks into del.icio.us we will mark everything as “not shared”. You are free to share them at any time – in fact, we encourage you to do so. Sharing is really what this site is about, after all.

I was looking forward to this feature for a long time. I just tried it with Opera 8.52. The bookmarks got all imported, but unfortunately the tagging did not work right. Every bookmark got tagged with all the folder names. So if I had link Link1 which was in folder A, and Link2 which was in folder B, both Link1 and Link1 got tagged as A,B.

    nothing 2 declare

  • Dave Marshall  |  Mar 31 2006 at 3:25 am

Now my co-workers will be more inclined to start using del.icio.us! Frankly, I’ve yet to realize the full collaboration power of your tool at my agricultural consulting firm, since I’ve been the only one there using it. This import feature will make it a lot easier for my colleagues to make the change and give it a go. Thanks!

  • Scalpa  |  Mar 31 2006 at 4:51 am

Works all right and what a pleasure! Only bug so far for non english users (with Firefox on Mac OSX) : accents do not go through, so you’ll find yourself with weird titles or worse: weird tags such as ?t? instead of été. Moreover these tags are apparently not listed in the tag base hence are not globally changeable. Since del.icio.us gracefully accepts accentuation, I assume it comes from some my (mac) formatting (isomac vs UTF-8 and what not).

Suggestions : either change the importer to check for format and accept all ;-) or more simply warn users like me to perform a conversion to a given format before uploading their bookmark file.

  • keith_is_here_2004  |  Mar 31 2006 at 5:03 am

For some time now you’ve supplied 2 methods of exporting bookmarks: 1) the export option which saves a bookmarks.html file with the description & tags in brackets, and 2) the complete XML export from http://del.icio.us/api/posts/all It would be really useful if we could import both of these formats flawlessly, with the tags being read from the brackets in 1), and the XML in 2). Thanks for the new feature! Keith.

Thank you for re-enabling this feature. I moved from Furl to del.icio.us and was really upset by the lack of an import function. I did manage to find a workaround cough bunnyhug cough, but it’s great that the inbuilt feature is back.

Any plans for OPML import facilities? That would really help people moving from other social bookmarking sites.

  • Ryan Dlugosz  |  Mar 31 2006 at 11:02 am

Any chance you’ll support OPML XML files in a future release? It’d be nice to be able to import things which export in this format, such as the Blog Subscriptions Export from Bloglines.

  • bizzia  |  Mar 31 2006 at 2:32 pm

A feature I’d love to use immediatly.

  • 3spots  |  Mar 31 2006 at 2:49 pm

Since the ‘inpage’ editing I’m back to del.icio.us it makes all the diference!

And now there’s duplicate filtering! Cool! (though I have not yet tried.) Are there any project for this all the time? A waring when a bookmark is added?

I have a lot of duplicates imported automatically from Flock…

  • David Barrett  |  Apr 1 2006 at 12:05 am

Is there any way to disable automatically using folder names as tags? I’ve bookmarked things in my browser really badly, as tab sets which such delightful names as “a”, “b”, and of course “Gmail - Inbox”.

I imported my bookmarks into my del.icio.us account to gain the most common tags (hilariously enough, I forgot to tick that checkbox, making the whole exercise fairly pointless). Now I need to delete all of the imported bookmarks (which means writing a script), then reimport an entirely re-organised (flattened) bookmarks file (which means writing another script) before deleting the tag for the import.

The best thing this import offers, from my point of view, is automatically adding popular tags to imported bookmarks. It would be great if people who have “organised” their bookmarks by throwing them into stupidly-named folders could take advantage of this too.

  • Evan Leeson  |  Apr 1 2006 at 2:50 am

I just imported my 544 bookmarks into del.icio.us. Worked great! But they are all private. Do i now have to make them public one at a time for all 544. I have nothing I want to keep as private.

  • Evan Leeson  |  Apr 1 2006 at 3:15 am

To add to my misery, the share function does not appear to be functioning every time. I’m haibg to go back and reshare about 30 percent of the bookmarks after selecting them in the innitial go thorugh. Even then some are not saving as shared. A little buggy. I’m using FireFox on OS X 10.4.5. I’m really hoping someone says “No, you idiot! Go to the xxxx page and check the xxxx setting. Dummy.”

  • Simon Crosland  |  Apr 1 2006 at 4:02 am

Thanks for this - excellent stuff! I have noticed one bug - tags applied automatically to imported items are not then avaiable in the tags management settings page, or the tags bundle page, or as tags to select when adding another new item.

  • tumlum  |  Apr 1 2006 at 5:09 am

Having the same problem here with sharing as Evan. My wild (and uneducated) guess is that it has something to do with the A part in the AJAX technology (meaning the asynchronous updating of stuff in the background). As no “real” page reloading or update is done while editing the entries I guess the script somehow can’t keep up with the user’s click speed. After doing this for quite some time now, I have the feeling the problem doesn’t occur as often when you reduce your work speed. It also doesn’t happen when using the “full-sreen edit” function which somehow involves a “real” page reload.

Regarding Simon’s comment, it seems the new tags only show up after you’ve shared at least one item from the tag category.

  • thefangmonster  |  Apr 1 2006 at 9:50 am

None of my imported links show up! The tags that should be associated with them show up, but I can’t see the links themselves. However, if I go to one of the imported URLs, and try to tag it again, then I find that del.icio.us displays all of my saved info for that link! If I then mark the link “public,” it shows up normally. After a lot of frustration I have discovered what is happening is apparently due to a bug in the system for marking links private. In the “Private Saving Ryan” thread (http://blog.del.icio.us/blog/2006/03/private_saving_.html), many people have complained about bookmarks marked “private” becoming invisible, despite all their tags still being displayed. Has anyone had this happen to all of their imported bookmarks? Has anyone found a workaround yet?

  • Dere  |  Apr 1 2006 at 9:54 am

Unfortunately i can’t edit/tag any of my imported bookmarks… because they are private now, and not only private for the public, for me too. I know they are there.. but i cant see anything.

  • mk  |  Apr 1 2006 at 5:14 pm

is there a “share all” function somewhere for the imported bookmarks? I have 5 pages worth that i would have to click through to share and i just want to share it all.

  • cbgreenwood  |  Apr 1 2006 at 7:13 pm

Dankeschön! Thx from Germany for this IMHO newoldkillerfeature. Del.icio.us, you is the king ;-)

  • Mark Ivey  |  Apr 1 2006 at 11:04 pm

Sweet, import/export is great! I think “share all” and “delete all” would be very good compliments to this feature. Suddenly I have hundreds of bookmarks that are difficult to manage.

  • netj  |  Apr 2 2006 at 11:03 am

“share all”, “delete all” very wanted!

I was excited to see the “import” and just uploaded my whole bookmark, and now I’ve got more than thousands to click “share” and “yes” :’(

I’m wondering why the renaming and deleting functions in “tags” do not work for “not shared” ones. Adding “share”/”unshare” to this page would be great!

  • Mycopheles  |  Apr 3 2006 at 2:02 pm

So where is the import tool?

  • zone  |  Apr 3 2006 at 10:42 pm

Hi =) I just gotta thank you for all the features rolled out over the past few weeks. del.icio.us is looking better and better! great job!

just oooone li’l thing.. Is the (RSS) alphabetical sorting comming up? Thanks!

  • Adam's Mom  |  Apr 4 2006 at 10:12 am

I can’t believe that I spent 2 hours looking for this feature, just a week before you published it. Very nice. Thanks!!

One bug, also mentioned above: imported tags do not appear in the tag management section so there is no way to rename them, etc.

Is this something I should wait for?

  • Burton  |  Apr 4 2006 at 11:14 am

Is anyone else having trouble logging into their account? I have 3 different accounts and I can’t get into a single one of them. I’ve tried this on multiple comupters and browsers. This might not be the place to post this, but I haven’t heard back from support yet.

  • Burton  |  Apr 4 2006 at 11:16 am

Grrr, I’m mistaken, please ignore my comment and sorry for posting it here.

  • madmw  |  Apr 4 2006 at 12:47 pm

+1 for “share all” and “delete all”

what about a checkbox asking the privacy status when importing?

I declare that it would be a good idea for us to have user forums for del.icio.us so that people will have a better place to post about the bugs and problems that they encounter rather than leaving a comment on the main blog- aside from that, thank you for the new feature! (I’d love to try it out, but I’ve so many things bookmarked that it would be a REAL NIGHTMARE for me to sort through them all… o.o! seriously.)

I notice that it takes longer and longer to post to delicious as my number of tags rises.

Is there a method possible that does not load the entire set of tags, just to tag/mark a new page?

Or is there another way to have a continuing session, rather than treating each new page marked/tagged as an entirely fresh and new visit to delicious?

And I would like to see a forum for queries like this, as well. Otherwise your blog will fill up with off-topic comments like this.

  • mcgraw  |  Apr 5 2006 at 5:45 pm

Nice. An essential feature really, and it seems to work well. Makes you guys the best social bookmarking site now (having done a bit of research). One thing - as Simon Crosland (and I think others) have mentioned : you cannot manage the imported tags. They just ain’t there under Settings >> Tags…

  • Andrew  |  Apr 5 2006 at 11:19 pm

I wonder if this import feature is the culprit behind the seemingly sudden rise in the number of spam bookmarks. Perhaps spammers (like this one: http://del.icio.us/iceagotwo) are importing vast numbers of spammy links all at once using the import feature, clogging popular tags with junk.

There ought to be a way to “antisocialize” or kill-file bookmarked domains as well as usernames.

  • Gurukarm  |  Apr 7 2006 at 4:10 pm

I’m really pleased with this feature; thanks so much! I need to stop bookmarking on my work computer, and this will help me do it!

  • brad  |  Apr 8 2006 at 6:18 pm

Looks like once the bookmarks are imported they break the search and they and not displayed when searching.

  • Antonio  |  Apr 9 2006 at 6:05 pm

Good feature, but I really need a way to manage new tags created by import (they aren’t under Settings >> Tags), and a mass “delete”/”make public feature”.

    Thank you

  • Moe  |  Apr 9 2006 at 10:28 pm

Thanks for the great service, guys. I’ve been waiting for this feature for a long time, but it’s not quite what I was hoping for. I have another del.icio.us account that I would like to use instead of this one, so I want to be able to import all of my bookmarks *exactly* the way they are ATM, with tags and public/private status intact. That would be most excellent.

can’t wait to try the import feature, although judging by the comments I’m curious to see if it’ll work…

maybe it’s time for a wiki, no? A la http://community.upcoming.org/ so we can keep track of all the changes, feature requests, etc.? Just a thought…

  • Matthew Tippett  |  Apr 14 2006 at 4:23 pm

The ability to import and export is crucial - thank you and well done!

BugWise: I think the import facility chokes if there is a blank title field in the file that is being imported???

I tried to import all of my bookmarks, and it came back with an error (Import Failed check that both of the following are true: * the file is within the size limit (5 MB) * the file was successfully exported from a supported web browser - though both of these things were true, so it had problems with somehting else!). It took me ages of time … importing bookmarks SubFolder by SubFolder to come to this conclusion.

I’m now very keen to bundle my tags. I think that this is a very useful feature, but as first mentioned by Evan Leeson | Apr 1, 2006 3:15:53 AM the imported tags do not show in the settings and so cannot be manipulated into bundles - is this intentional?

I do hope that my tags will appear in http://del.icio.us/settings/USER/bundle before too long (maybe the A of AJAX as Simon Crosland | Apr 1, 2006 4:02:01 AM suggests)?

Generally, I think the idea of bundles (heiarchy 1) and tags (hierarchy 2) is brilliant for having summary AND detail (where each child is dependent on the parent)- in other spheres of IntelligenceArchitecture I have found that 3 levels of hierarchy can be very useful, and rarey do you need more than 4 (and your brain cannot compe with more!).

    All the best, Matt T

I have imported a number of bookmarks from firefox and imported them in delicious. However the imported bookmarks do not show. I do see the tags and at the bottom of the page it says ‘page 1 of 24′. But clicking on earlier and later does not work.

Please - you can’t enccourage us to Share, then make it sooooooo laborious to make 1000’s of imnported bookmarks public.

Any way of allowing all tages associated with a bundle public?

  • Sophia  |  Apr 19 2006 at 10:01 pm

Thanks for improving an already fantastic service! The ability to consolidate all my bookmarks is really helpful.

It appears that when you import bookmarks, the tags don’t show up where you can manage them (renaming, bundling) unless you have shared at least one bookmark that uses that tag. The tag will then show that it is associated with the number of shared bookmarks, instead of all the bookmarks, public and private.

To echo many people before me: please add a “share all” feature!

I have just started using del.icio.us and the import feature is great. However, I would like to recommend another feature that is on a related note, and has been mentioned in many of the comments earlier: a “bulk edit” operation based on tags. We have the ability to modify tag names en-masse. However, if we wanted to delete, share or make private, or add a new tag to all of our del.icio.us links, we currently have to walk through every link on our page. Ultimately, this will make del.icio.us more cumbersome for the user as she increases her link count, and will ultimately discourage heavy usage. For example, I imported my bookmarks, and I got the whole slew of WizRSS public links that had been put there when I installed WizRSS. I could leave them all private and ignore them; I could go through each one individually and delete or share it. However, what would be phenomenally useful if I could issue a simple one-click/one-screen command to delete all links in my space that have the WizRSS tag. Or to share all links in my space that have the reference tag.

  • Keith  |  Apr 21 2006 at 11:20 am

RETURN OF THE AD SPAM! It seems del.icio.us is being targeted by ad spam again, and somehow the spammers have found a way to get their link displayed even when the tags don’t match! For example look at http://del.icio.us/tag/beautiful+landscape+europe This lists results such as “FilesLand Software Archive”, which isn’t tagged beautiful, landscape or europe. It’s tags are “software game windows free internet web files tool file utility”.

  • Keith  |  Apr 21 2006 at 11:23 am

…also take a look at this blatant Ad spam: http://del.icio.us/johnjay1999 I think we need a limit on the number of tags allowed per link. Say 30 maybe?

  • Keith  |  Apr 21 2006 at 11:27 am

Hmmm… the ones under beautiful+landscape+europe seem to have disappeared.

  • Patrick Haney  |  Apr 25 2006 at 4:23 pm

Has anyone else tried exporting their del.icio.us bookmarks and then importing them into another account? I’m finding that notes are lost in the process, yet tags seem to come in fine. Also, once imported, I am unable to edit or delete the tags that come in, even though they seem to show up fine otherwise.

I’m switching over to another account and would rather not retype over 1,300 notes for my current bookmark set.

  • deletedsoul  |  Apr 25 2006 at 10:58 pm

Finally using del.icio.us now that the import feature has been implemented, but sharing 900 bookmarks individually is going to be a pain in the rump.

  • dequid  |  Apr 26 2006 at 8:01 am

Nice features recently. Now i have another feature request/idea. Didn’t know where to post so i’ll do it here:

I would be nice if one could bundle special tags directly via a specified prefix, for instance: i give my bookmarks various tags and a special tag ‘dequid:sort’ or ‘dequid:interesting’. Then i have to go to my settings and manually put the tag into my ‘dequid’ bundle. Would be nice if all ‘dequid:’-prefixed tags automatically go to that bundle. Just an idea.

Greets and keep up the great work.

    Exporting MyWeb2 to Delicious

Shortly after the launch of MyWeb2, I decided to take a bite of our own dog food and gave it a try. I imported my bookmarks from delcious and used it for a few months. A bit later, Yahoo bought delicious, and I wanted to switch back. Only one problem: …

    SHARE ALL!!!

  • elvir  |  May 24 2006 at 5:46 am

i have a thing to declare.

i have been using delicious for some time like two months ago, then i started to use bookmarks at netvibes, becouse imported delicious to netvibes does not sortby tags. and now i moved back to delicios to look if i can export my bookmarks and saw some changes.

i think we were able to sort bookmarks by tags, but now my tags has dissapeared. also i cannot create my own tags, it offers me public tags, for ex im gonna save a link and wanna tag it `rss` but i cant create my own rss tag as i did not have one before, it offers me to save it to public rss tag where thousands of sites related to rss are saved, how can i find back my site from that public tag?

what? are u forcing your users in using tags, i donno what changes you have done to delicious but this `innovation` with tags really dissappointed me.

  • elvir  |  May 24 2006 at 5:54 am

oh, in the end i found how to create new tag, this new change like `recommended tags` is quite stupid, why are u suggesting mt a tag that i have created. am i fool not know where to save my bookmark? and it shows my tag in `suggested tags` instead of `your tags`. BTW, why all my tags are not displayed under `post` form? and when i go to `your bookmarks` why i cant see list of my tags so that i can sort my bookmarks. do i have to know tags by heart to type them to del.icio.us/elvirs/rss and press enter to bring all bookmarks tagged `rss`

really man, think one more time on this `features` you brought recently

  • tagturedsubjectivity  |  May 25 2006 at 10:34 am

“Sharing is really what this site is about, after all.”

great, yeah, but my 300+ imported bookmarks will have to stay private until there’s a batch-share-option added.

why isn’t this feature built in or at least optional in the import settings?

Writing my favoured urls into a notebook by hand and typing them into the address bar whenever needed takes as much time as setting the “shared” status individually to every item saved.

Please a ’share all’ option as per the many comments above, after importing 1,000 bookmarks this has been a 2 hour mind numbing experience.

Not least of all after getting to page 12 of my bookmarks (100 per page) 200 or so were not shared so I had to go though all of my bookmarks again and re-do the missed items again, and a third time to clear up the 30 or so it didn’t update on the second run (presuming AJAX caching)

    Cheers,

    Stephen

  • tulipa  |  Jul 3 2006 at 4:18 am

I just introduced a friend to del.icio.us tonight after raving about it to her. She promptly tried to import her bookmarks from Firefox, and after failing three times, turned off the ‘popular tags’ option and had it work… only to find it had saved her 800+ bookmarks as “not shared”. Not only that, but this feature’s been out since March with nary a word about it since, not even to respond to the people begging for a mass-sharing option - which I would think would be relatively easy. It makes no sense for this kind of service to NOT have any mass-editorial options, but it’s just disappointing to not even have any acknowledgement of the repeated request for such. My friend is pretty soured on this site now. :P

  • Scott Cramer  |  Jul 14 2006 at 6:10 am

  • Chris  |  Jul 19 2006 at 7:58 am

Marking all imports as “not shared” is a very poor decision for a social bookmarking service. Particularly when you dont have a “share all” option. This import tool was not very well thought out.

  • Chris  |  Aug 28 2006 at 12:25 am

    there’s no

    SHARE ALL (bookmarks)?

I tried liking DELICIOUS, emphasis on tried, not just once, not twice, but multiple times.

Mass-edit is a must for me, and not to have it is a dealbreaker to me.

Perhaps i would try this site again, perhaps.

It will also let you do bulk edits (or batch-mode changes) to your bookmarks’ tags, titles and URLs using basic search and replace logic.

  • Lost Bookmarks  |  Nov 1 2006 at 8:12 am

So I downloaded the new Firefox. No problems… So I then updated my extensions on Firefox; BIG PROBLEM. The Delicious extension/add-on completely screwed my browser up, then it proceeded to take control of my Bookmarks. After trying to disable it several times, and reorganizing my Bookmarks, I thought I had your little monster under control. But no, the Delicious extension was still going at it, every time I tried to restart Firefox. The extension could NOT handle the large number of Bookmarks, and just froze the hell out of everything. After trying everything, I reverted to my “Original Bookmarks” and just deleted the whole nasty morsel from my hard drive… Little did I know that it was going to take half my Bookmarks with it. WHY? Delicious Why? [Just keep it simple and many of us will be a lot happier.]
