this just in
The del.icio.us popular page is very… well, popular. Many of you read it frequently and use it to find interesting new links. While it is a great source of links, I thought we could do a better job of showing off what the community is thinking about and looking at. So we’re trying something new: You’ll notice that the del.icio.us homepage now features a hotlist which is updated every hour to show you the top three most popular links as of that moment. These links are taken directly from the popular page, and we never show the same link twice. This guarantees that every time you visit the homepage, you’ll see something new (well, at least every hour).
In addition, we’ve added a new way to filter items on the recent posts page, which will allow you to only see items that have been bookmarked by more than one other person.
We are continually experimenting with how things should work. As always, feedback and ideas are welcome.

Sorry, I liked the old home page better. The tags always gave me interesting ideas and were often more timely than the links.

I absolutely HATE this new front page. I think it’s a good idea (kinda), but not for the front page.
Andy Baio | May 24 2006 at 11:35 pm
Since a link never shows up twice, this new frontpage will get much better over time as all the popular older links (e.g. Digg, Flickr, etc) get rotated out. I like it.
webzter | May 25 2006 at 4:44 am
I have to agree with hsfear. The wide variety of goodies on the old home page were a goldmine of interesting links. Now we’re just seeing the popular links displayed differently.

On the other hand… the new thresholded recent page is pretty awesome ;)
any plans to make a variant on that which uses links in your social network? (this is pretty similar to what I do with spicylinks — http://taint.org/2006/05/12/143823a.html )

I have to admit that I’m not in love with the new homepage either. The old version definitely had more to explore; this new page is too reminiscent of Digg’s homepage with just a long list of links, but it lacks Digg’s commenting ability.
Fortunately, the popular RSS feed allows me to get the list the way I want it - on my Google personalized homepage, right next to Digg & Slashdot.
My only gripe about the popular list is that it has been full of websites from Asian countries lately (and I can’t read Japanese). While I whoeheartedly appreciate the international community’s use of del.icio.us, it would be nice to be able to filter popular feeds by language.
Hashim | May 25 2006 at 8:35 am
the recent links would be cool if it showed only NEW links that haven’t been in the system before, but are bookmarked by more than one person.
This way I can quickly see what’s becoming popular on the edge
Debajit | May 25 2006 at 9:19 am
The new home-page is great but feels a little “lonely” :) I would like to see the previous split format, with recent links on the left pane and the current home-page’s content in the right pane.
Also, now that we have the “recent” link on the top line, does “Help” seem a little out-of-place alongside “popular” and “recent”? The second line seems a better place for “Help”.
angusf | May 25 2006 at 10:00 am
Retaining some form of tag based browseing on the home page would improve this design. Perhaps the list of currently popular tags? Tags on the homepage demonstrate to new users the power of tagging their own links, they provide a sense of the breadth of content being linked to by users and allow serindipitous exploration of unplanned/unfamiliar topics.
Raymond Brigleb | May 25 2006 at 10:48 am
I really did like the groups on the old page as well. The new one is really, really spare. It seems like 90% of the content has been removed, as well as all logical groupings except the number of hours the links are dated. Where’s my tags and groupings!?!

In addition to bookmarking I use del.icio.us for link-blogging these days like a lot of other bloggers. I like to use links (and if possible other html formattings) inside descriptions of my bookmarks so for example I can provide my visitors some information about where (on which site or blog) I found each link I blogged it. Also I think if you increase length of description it may be a great help for linkbloggers.

Actually I’m growing to like it, the tags listed for the first link each hour partially fulfill my earlier suggestion.
Perhaps it was just too violent a change to something i was comfortable with? Some interesting info on how ebay used to do it:
http://archives.cnn.com/2001/TECH/industry/06/07/ebay.lessons.learned.idg/
“If they’d flipped a switch and gone from yellow to white, everyone would have screamed,” said eBay senior usability engineer Laura Borns. “But no one had any complaints about it, because it was so gradual.”

Adding my vote to “I hate this new front page” I had del.icio.us as my browser home page because whenever I’d open a new browser I’d be greeted with some organized serendipity. The tag headings helped me know what the links were about because webpage titles don’t really do a good job explaining themselves. The timeliness of the links didn’t matter so much to me because even if it’s 4 years old, if I haven’t read it yet, it’s new to me.
Seans | May 26 2006 at 11:32 am
Ditto on “I hate this new front page.” It looks slick but doesn’t convey what del.icio.us is about very well. New visitors will be confused.
And, please, show tags on the Popular page.
Tyler | May 26 2006 at 12:30 pm
I really enjoyed the previous version with the split homepage. The tagging system on the right side pane was the best part of the homepage. I enjoy more random links than the new popular links, as they seem more interesting. Also, the tags are one of the most integral parts of del.icio.us; with the new design they are hardly on the homepage. Tags do a much better job of categorizing links and describing what the link is. The setup below seems to be the most logical way to set up a list, with multiple tags and links underneath.
Tag 1
Link 1
Link 2
Link 3
Link 4
Link 5
>More
The tags could also be categorized by popularity (though again, I prefer the more random-type tags), and the links below could be ranked as well. This is basically how the old homepage worked, but it just seems like such a perfect setup that it doesn’t need changing.
Tyler | May 26 2006 at 1:37 pm
I made a quick mock up of the new design mixed with the old design. It might be too much having 3 panes, but it could work. http://tyler.c.alexander.googlepages.com/home Tags should be prevalent on the page. The newest links on the left could be continually updated with links saved by a set number of users. The middle set of popular links could be like the new homepage. The right side set of random links could be like the old style right side pane.
Byron | May 26 2006 at 6:17 pm
Not an improvement. Homepage went from being info-rich to info-poor. I don’t care what people are thinking an hour ago, two hours ago, etc, there’s no value in that. What I care about is, what have become over the past several days or weeks the most valuable links on the web, which is what the prior del.icio.us homepage was good for. This new homepage would make an interesting *addition* to the old one, but certainly not a sufficient replacement for it. Additionally, changes like this should not be made on the live homepage, they should be first previewed on a beta page, prominently linked from the homepage if necessary.
michelle | May 26 2006 at 8:47 pm
nope, not liking this either. a big part ofmy excitement over joining the del.icio.us community was the opportunity to discover things via the “homepage.” in fact, doing so wasa regular event dduring breaks and lunch. i adoredt he luck-of-the-draw approach, and the resulting resource discovery was very useful.
this page has almost nothing to offer in that regard. and in fact, contains a lot of wasted white space.
please, please, please bring it back.
is there any possibility of selecting via a profile preference setting?
thanks for a great tool, and thank you for letting us provide feedback.

l.m.orchard | May 27 2006 at 12:39 am
I like the new home page. I never quite liked the random tag samplers. Yet also, I never thought that it should be any sort of master firehose onto everything - just some teasers to get a taste and starting points for further exploration. A few thoughts:
- I wish there were 5 top links per hour, rather than 3. Also, I’d like to see tags attached to every link, not just the first. I find myself wanting to see more.
- Maybe this would do well with a sort of top-tags-per-hour column addition?

I do not like the new homepage. The popular links classified by hour do not bring me a relevant information. The recent links are like Google news, they are the real time, the life, the web :) Please come back with the recent links. Thanks.

Chris Brainard | May 27 2006 at 12:29 pm
I really dislike the new frontpage as it is not very usable at all. The access to the list of tags was already reduced and now there are no tags to access, you have to be smart enough to figure it out. It is a total rip off of Digg and destroys what made delicious work in the first place. It also broke bettersearch which was a really nice feature that gave previews of the sites.
The choices you have been making for Delicious have been ruining it as a usable site. Instead of promoting the group dynamic of tagging it is be reduced to a popularity contest agaist Digg. You should have been focusing on expanding it’s bookmark networking like Spurl.net has done. Here is my suggestion of what would make the frontpage great:
1. current items with the most who saved it.
2. the tag cloud of the 100 most popular tags
3. voting ability
4. user ability to customize the frontpage if you are logged in.
5. interfacing with other bookmarking programs.
Phil | May 28 2006 at 3:07 am
Definitely don’t like this new look… It seriously demphasizes tags, and frankly, seems to be trending towards becoming just another unmemorable buzz aggregator. The “popular” page did that just fine, while still offering people coming into the main page a sense of new, untapped stuff to explore.
Luke | May 28 2006 at 3:07 pm
The front page was what sucked me in the first time I got here; now it just makes me close the damn tab.
Sorry to be critical, but seriously: bring it back (revised or not).

Martin Gordon | May 29 2006 at 4:56 pm
Another vote for the old page. The key is density of links. The old page had a lot more links “above the fold”. On the new one, I’m getting about 13 links above the fold because of the large font and other incidentals.
Any way we can get it back? Maybe not as the front page itself, but maybe at del.icio.us/combined or something like that.
viju | May 30 2006 at 3:24 am
The new home page is disappointing. It looks more like a filtered version of the popular page. The older one had a lot of new links which were on their way to populars.I vote for the old page.
antoine | May 30 2006 at 4:48 pm
Adding my vote to “I hate this new front page”.
Because less links are printed and without comments.
Moreover, printing method for ‘number of people who bookmarked a link’ was better before.
JeepDay | May 30 2006 at 11:46 pm
My first impression of the change was not good, then I found the recent links button and now I am happy again. I like to surf the recent links to see what is out there different. The stuff that is most popular is… well I guess it is popular, not new and exciting.
I very much like the ability to select “saved by at least” users. Setting it to default to 2 was great idea; it is very cool and should discourage those who post solely for spam. Can we get “saved by at least” users on the search function also?
I have to say that I think I am in the camp with those who prefer the old format of a split page with the popular and the recent on each side.
I think you are doing a great job keep up the good work.

This is not directly related to the changes on the first page, but rather a few suggestions for improving del.icio.us personal pages:
1. Allow one to arrange all favourites in alphabetical order as well as chronological order (according to latest entry/change).
2. Number all pages instead of only including “earlier” and “later” and having us click through every page
3. Allow for search of all words among one’s favourites (title, notes and url) and not only the tags
Kind regards,
Susanne

Where do you go to suggest improvements to the product?
You guys need to put up a “NEW WINDOW” option for the links on (my and others’) personal page. I _like_ using del.icio.us as a jumping-off point for further navigating, but I don’t want to have to reload the whole flipping page every time I’m done with following a link and want to change the subject!

Bring back the old homepage! Or at least give us an option to toggle between the old and new. I loved the random selection of links. I would always find 5 - 10 interesting things to look at. The new homepage just doesn’t have the variety!

marillaanne | Jun 3 2006 at 5:21 pm
I don’t really want to know what’s popular … I want to know what’s interesting. Popular is not always interesting … Popular can become just a way to recycle the same old same old …
If I want popular I’ll go hang out at, oh, GASP … yahoo’s home page. I enjoyed the old home page because I just never knew … now I don’t even look … not to be rebellious … i’ve just lost interest.
Come on … be different … be real … popularity contests are rapidly becoming passe’ … I mean kind sirs and madams … do you really think you are serving the crowd that needs a watered, down home page? Do you think that even 30% of our browsers start up to the yahoo home page or some similar diving board into the trashy side of the web? I really seriously doubt it.
From what I’ve seen, you’re serving the crowd that is more on the level with contributors to the web rather than merely observers/consumers of the web.
AND what I’m reallllly missing is the remember me feature … this logging in all the time brings to mind profane words. It was bad enough that del.icio.us wouldn’t allow Firefox to remember my password … but now it doesn’t allow for remember me at all!!
Why?!
I hate that my first post is all grumpy … but … grr … {remembering various techy friends who have scoffed at my love of del.icio.us … }

quite a few things are making it to the delicious page because of 10 fabricated users. they are tagtogo1 thru tagtogo10. Check out their links - they are all linking to the same websites. Clearly it is a business doing this. ANd bc of there are 10 of them they get anything to the popular page.
This could have been caught in software teh first time they did it - 10 new users with only one post, all exactly the same, should NOT make the popular page.

While the new changes look good, I love some of the features from the old where you can see all the recent posts (popular or not). The new front page only makes the popular ones more popular while any other recent posts are likely to be discovered. It does not seem fair eh. hi. i enjoy using the “RSS-ticker” method of reviewing old locations of interest. in this manner, i can go about my business– which i should be doing and not just “browsing” (i.e. a time and place for R & D but not necessarily ALL DAY LONG as i too often do…)– so the Ticker can go in the background– yet if i happen to see something that catches my interest– perhaps an “OLD” bookmark which is now “coincidentally” related to a current issue or project– i’m immediately reminded of the former bookmark, likely a bit of its contents, and of course by clicking the ticker, i can go there and check it out– see if it was improtant, truly relevant… whatever (you get the idea, i’m sure…)
it would be cool if i could do an RSS-feed of “recent” bookmarks for only MY user name. maybe this is the default? from what i have tried– i doesn’t seem perfectly obvious to me– but i would assume this is the case.
so in general that’s my interest– to be able to apply the custom scripting / options / whatever– to my own stuff, in addition to the global user community. i feel the “User” sorting options, though robust in many ways (Bundles, etc.), certain obvious issues seem to have been yet overlooked. in general of course it all rocks pretty well. ;)
