hello world!

Hello world - I’m Les Orchard. I’ve been a long-time fan and user of del.icio.us, developer of del.icio.us mash-ups, and recent author of Hacking del.icio.us. The obvious next step in this evolution is to be fully assimilated into the del.icio.us cube. So as of this week I have joined the del.icio.us team out in sunny California.

Dealing with a cross-country move and new employee orientation, my head’s still spinning faster than my hard drive platters. But, very shortly, I’ll be pitching in to help enhance and expand del.icio.us. I’m hoping to make use of lessons I picked up in writing my last book, as well as any other tricks I’ve stuffed into my head over the years. I’m not allowed to talk about all the ultra-awesome stuff on the horizon, but I can say that I’m geeked to be here!

Congrats, Les! Your presence there bolsters my hope that they will remain non-evil despite the corporate takeover :)

Dear Les, could you help add a function to del.icio.us, which can randomly present a bookmark.

For instance, if I hit some button under del.icio.us/my_user_name, then I get a random bookmark out of all my tens of hundreds bookmarks.

If I hit a button under del.icio.us/my_user_name/tag_1, I get a random bookmark with tag_1. May users want this function.

    del.Les.us,

for a while now, I’ve been maintaining a del.icio.us stylesheet mod. I strive to skin the site in its entirety, keeping up with all the various changes del.icio.us goes through along the way. There are some things however, such as certain elements of the import page, which are (almost) beyond the reach of user defined stylesheets. Perhaps you could keep us CSS hackers in mind as these sorts of changes are being made… And do give the aforementioned skin a try (if you’re running firefox) via http://skindelicious.blogspot.com/

Congratulations Les! We could really do with some kind of official del.icio.us forum to discuss new ideas, etc. This blog system, while good for announcements, is terrible for feedback or any other kind of ideas/suggestions. Keith. :D

I’ve already put this request to support but I guess it won’t hurt to ask an enthuastic new developer if they want to make it happen. ;)

I’d really, really, *really* like to have more than 255 characters to store notes in when I bookmark a post. I use del.icio.us as a linkblog on my site and would like to have the room to write more than a few of sentences about a bookmark.

On a related note, some limited subset of HTML or markdown in notes would be cool too.

I’ve recently spoken to the crew at ma.gnolia (another social bookmarking service) and they allow notes of unlimited size and have sub-HTML formatting in the pipeline. I don’t want to have to jump ship as I started with del.icio.us ages ago and still think it’s great.

Apart from the 255 character limit on notes.

    Keep up the great work!
