settings the controls for the heart of the sun

Take a look at your settings — you know, the link up in the top right corner of any page when you’re logged in. It’s not cryptic anymore! Your settings pages are where you have all kinds of interesting options: importing and exporting bookmarks, enabling private saving, managing tags, and more. The pages used to be a little secretive about which option did what, so I’ve completely revised them to be much friendlier. For example, did you know you can put a Creative Commons license on the RSS feeds for your bookmarks?

What happened to the antisocial setting? Has this gone away for good?

  • Kishore Balakrishnan  |  Aug 31 2006 at 6:45 pm

Consider linking “your settings” to http://del.icio.us/settings/

    del.icio.us 新設定頁

barry: It’s been broken for a while, so we decided to jettison it; if there’s demand, we can put it back on the todo list. Kishore: Ah, good idea. We’ll edit it soon.

I think there would be more important things than changing some optics… e.g. API changes to export privacy state of each bookmark or changes to the search engine (I’d like to: a)include OR EXCLUDE tags,

b)searching for substrings like *ball* , returning results for basketball and baseball)

  • joshua  |  Sep 1 2006 at 3:44 am

Max, the API already does add shared=”no” to private items

  • Max  |  Sep 1 2006 at 3:54 am

Joshua, that’s great!Thanks.. Maybe the export to html should also support this feature, I don’t think it does right now, right? So it’s only b) :-)

    It’s beautiful! Thanks!

Max: Also take a look at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ydn-delicious/message/280 :) Part of what I’m doing here this summer is helping expose all this cool stuff - there are tons of things you can do with del.icio.us that are awesome but hardly anyone knows about them…yet.

  • joshua  |  Sep 1 2006 at 2:36 pm

Max, you’re right, but the bookmarks export format is not very extensible. But we’ll try to figure something out.

Has the idea of connecting or displaying users based on shared link preferences been discussed? (Where?)

As in, “show me a list of people, or the five people, who have tagged the most links that I have tagged?”

Yeah, I’ll bet that would require some heavy computation, but you have to admit it would be cool and be a great way to discover people with similar interests in a statistical sense.

Just curious. I’m very happy with the way delicious integrates with my blog, just added a tag cloud too.

This is so much better. Have you folks considered adding more keyboard control. Maybe a little arrow to the left of the bookmark which can be moved up or down using cursor up and down keys and prev and next pages using the left and right key and enter to open the page in a new tab. It would be great if you add vi style movement using hjkl. Another small request is that when I use Ctrl+Shift+. the page loads and the cursor is on the address bar. It would help to bring the cursor to the topmost input box.

    Thanks.

Miles: It’s definitely an interesting idea, and more than a few people are thinking about it — you might be interested in this project: http://www.mandalabrot.net/delicious/ (it’s beautiful, too). Oopsh!: It’s in the works. :) This looks like a clever way to do it right now: http://tinyurl.com/zd4cc . homer123: Interesting ideas. Some of that can be done with your browser’s built-in keyboard shortcuts (http://www.mozilla.org/support/firefox/keyboard ), but we’re thinking about adding accesskeys too.

  • mo  |  Sep 2 2006 at 11:39 pm

it’s very interesting and i’m sure many people agree with me, good luck.

  • Joe Becher  |  Sep 2 2006 at 11:44 pm

    Much better. Thank you.

Thanks a lot Britta… i think the method is too much “clever” for me :)

  • Max  |  Sep 4 2006 at 3:37 am

    Thanks Britta! Great tips!

This new setting interface makes me discover the private bookmarking. It is a great feature. Maybe you could associate it with anonymous bookmarks.

You said anonymous option is useless because people would choose by majority the private one. But if, to set a bookmark totally private, users have to set it anonymous in a first place, they would think twice and stay with the anonymous option.

The effort of additional clicks would balance the fact of been totally away of the community (which is not so good for delicious comminuty). Moreover anonymous bookmarks would allow at least to collect tag information and make appear new sites.

  • homer123  |  Sep 7 2006 at 8:24 pm

Suggestion regarding the “links for you” feature… Just like it shows that I have xx number of inks for me… would it be possible to show the number of unread/unclicked links that I posted for other people. This way when I talk to someone I dont have to ask them if they saw the links I posted for them…. i can see this info on my del page itself.

    Thanks

what is the rationale behind applying license to content that is not really yours. i mean links are url’s to sites that you may not own.

  • britta  |  Sep 8 2006 at 6:17 pm

Diabolic Preacher: Take a look at our terms of service, section 3 - http://del.icio.us/help/terms - it has some details about this. Feel free to email us if you have further questions.

  • angusf  |  Sep 11 2006 at 8:55 pm

Settings page is great - thanks.

Seems appropriate to make this request again: Please improve the rename tags UI.

    - display a list of all tags (not in a dropdown) and allow me to edit the tags inline.

Diabolic Preacher, I think its fair to “own” the list of urls you compile and publish using Del.icio.us. I don’t own the content represented by the URL but I could claim to own a listing of links - it takes time, skill & creative decisions to compile such a list and could be more or less useful to others.

goshes i would love to be able to, like, invite my sister to browse my delicious page by the simple expedient of a “invite” link on the top of my screen! i want to click a link and be prompted for an email address and leave a note. bonus points if i could do so in such a way as to only share with her a link to a page revealing specific tags. for instance she’s interviewing at google, so i wish i could send her an email inviting her to look at the articles i’ve tagged “google” and those only. anyhoo. hire me, i’m finishing my mba at unc in may. :)

I’m with barry — bring back the antisocial! It’s a wonderful idea, and even if it apparently didn’t always work, I made good use of it.

Perhaps you could bring it back and slap a “beta” label on it, along with a description of known bugs.
