add me to your network
Many of you have been using your network to keep up with the interesting things that other people are bookmarking. Many of you are also starting to notice that you have “fans” – people who like your bookmarks and have added you to their networks. This feature of del.icio.us is getting popular enough now that we wanted to make it easier for you to grow your network and to tell the world how connected you are.
With that in mind, today we rolled-out our Network Badge! This new badge allows you to tell people about your network from your own Web site or blog. These details can include your user name on del.icio.us with a link to your bookmarks, how many people you have in your network, how many fans you have, as well as a link others can use to easily add you to their own del.icio.us networks.
Like Tagrolls and Linkrolls, Network Badges are JavaScript includes that you can copy and paste into your site’s HTML or your blog’s templates. By visiting its help page, you can customize the content and appearance of your Network Badge and get HTML code for insertion into your own pages.
So get networking!

LOL. I’ve just added myself to my network :D

Can you fix this, please.

Also, the line breaks inside the comments are ignored.
Is this a TypePad bug?

Nice feature!
Mshades | Aug 4 2006 at 3:53 am
Nice feature, although the script tag doesn’t seem to sit well with Flickr or Myspace’s profile pages. Unless I’m missing something obvious….
Marius Watz | Aug 4 2006 at 5:04 am
Great feature in terms of publicizing del.icio.us activity. My only worry would be that it’ll make del.icio.us more like a social network, but I guess that Pandora’s box has already been opened. Whenever I post a link on del.icio.us I’m very aware that it will be seen by more than 20 people, hence I have to edit what I post. Some bookmarks are private or not intended for public viewing. And I don’t mean porn, a while back I posted some Google Maps links to relevant personal addresses, then deleted them when I realized that it would be a bad idea to have those visible to just anyone.
Del.icio.us posting is becoming a form of miniblogging, editing links now has a performative public aspect. But I would like to avoid having to find a separate bookmarking service for my non-public links. I have a feature request: Private bookmarks. A simple checkbox would allow you to save some bookmarks as being private. Should be easy to implement.
And if the aim really is to make del.icio.us more like a social network, you really should implement a way for people to comment on links. I’ve already seen people use the link descriptions as mini-blogs…
Finally, let me just say that del.icio.us remains a favorite and I like the recent developments, I just think you need privacy options…
annamoo | Aug 4 2006 at 5:05 am
Niiiiice, but like mshades says myspace doesn’t like javascript. Would be good if a non-java version could be developed? Thanks.
Andre | Aug 4 2006 at 9:44 am
I agree with Marius. It would be great if you create a way to save bookmarks as private. Maybe a “for:me” or “private” tag?. Only links that doesn’t contains that tag would be visible to other users.
majman | Aug 4 2006 at 10:07 am
so is there a way to reveal who your fans are?
Britta | Aug 4 2006 at 11:59 am
Marius, Andre: You can enable private saving by going to “settings” (at the top right of any page) and selecting “private saving” from the right side of the page. Then, when saving or editing a link, click the “do not share” checkbox in the form and that bookmark will be private. :)
majman: Do you mean to other people (displayed in your badge) or to yourself? To see your own fans, look at the right side of your network page, on the bottom of the grey box. If you have any fans yet, you’ll see a “your fans” link there.
Marius Watz | Aug 4 2006 at 1:02 pm
Britta, thanks for the feedback, it was hard to find but I’ve now got private saving enabled. I will experiment with the feature in coming weeks. I blogged a more thorough comment on my Code & form blog, see this link:

Is there a way to import somebodies network and add it to your own?
I mean, somebody established a huge network of active delicious users, I like his list and I want to append his list to my network without adding them one by one. Making this process simple can create more useful and richer networks.

del.icio.us rulez the best web2.0 shit in the net
Pat | Aug 5 2006 at 9:40 pm
How about a normal “network badge” (aka “chicklet”) that’s similar in nature to the “Add to Yahoo” and “Add to Google” chicklets. Basically, I’m looking for something that’s OFFICIALLY by del.icio.us and that’s exactly or very close to 91×17 pixels.
That would be a blessing. Thank you!

Share your del.icio.us links with network badges
The good folks at del.icio.us central have added a new way for you to grow and share your del.icio.us community: the del.icio.us network badge (sounds like something from the Boy Scouts!). Just like other del.icio.us widgets, all you need…
brandy | Aug 7 2006 at 10:56 am
Nice but won’t work for a lot of people.. especially the crowd that uses MySpace, since you can’t post scripts. Also won’t work for LJ as someone else mentioned. :/
Taylorrd | Aug 7 2006 at 11:22 am
If you want to add a “bookmark with delicious” button to is there a preferred or standard way to do this.
Britta | Aug 7 2006 at 12:00 pm
We’re working on non-javascript versions. :) Taylorrd: try http://del.icio.us/help/forpublishers
rockitbaby | Aug 7 2006 at 12:10 pm
Great feature.
I wrote an del.icio.us network explorer in processing based on the json feeds.
Try it out at http://www.twoantennas.com/projects/delicious-network-explorer/
taylorrd | Aug 7 2006 at 2:49 pm
Thank you Britta for the info. Non-javascript tools to submit a site to delicious would be great.
Britta | Aug 7 2006 at 2:57 pm
Alex Muntean: Actually, being able to add yourself to your network isn’t really a bug. It may seem a bit odd, but we think some people might find it useful. Also, we’ll look into the linebreak thing when we get a chance.
Angela | Aug 7 2006 at 4:15 pm
Script doesn’t seem to work on my Movable Type blog, either.
Armchair Anarchist | Aug 7 2006 at 7:23 pm
Well, that’s just plain weird. This little network badge gizmo works just fine, but I cant get the cursed tagroll gizmo to appear anywhere in my Wordpress blog (body, sidebar, wherever) and I can’t work out why. Which sucks. Other people seem to have it working, and I’ve checked the page sources for theirs and my pages - there seems to be no difference. Could this be a server-side issue with my host, perhaps? Any advice, people?
Britta | Aug 7 2006 at 7:53 pm
Angela, Armchair Anarchist: For individual blog issues, you can email support@del.icio.us directly with all the relevant details — I can help troubleshoot odd things there. :)

Sandy Piderit | Aug 9 2006 at 6:59 am
I’m using it now, at the bottom of my page — it’s cool! Thanks!
I have the same question as majman, though: is there a way to reveal who your fans are?
or at least, is there a way that I can figure out who is subscribed to my delicious account?
Sandy Piderit | Aug 9 2006 at 7:04 am
OOOps, I figured it out with some more diligent clicking.
Substitute your username into http://del.icio.us/network/managementprof and then look over on the left, under the search box, for “Your Fans”. Click on the little triangle to the left of that phrase, and a list of your fans will appear.

I’m just discovering my way through this delicious web site. So… I’m not sure whether I should post a Blog or merely respond to comments I’ve received from other members. I’ll return later and be more responsive.

It would be nice if the text that appears was editable too. I’d like to put this in my wordpress sidebar but it’s way too wide as is.
Bunyamin Najmi | Aug 11 2006 at 7:51 am
I put that Network Badge on my blog, nice…
Dene | Aug 11 2006 at 3:44 pm
I agree with Paulo Drummondd and why does the network badge have to use javascript?
Dene | Aug 11 2006 at 3:56 pm
to expand on my little complaint there lol: when trying to use the network badge on my website I’ve been able to modify the link to look the way I want it to though I’m not sure about the rest of the text just yet.
why I was complaining about the use of javascript: I’d like to see a server side link so I could view the source and work out how to edit the text, though I’m guessing maybe I could edit it from a style sheet by modifying something like the “” tags, though I try to work with headings mostly so that is perhaps my problem…
Fibo | Aug 13 2006 at 5:14 am
The ‘Save this’ code is not very good.
- For those sites where pages are generated by php, it’s easier to use php rather than javascript: this will work even on browser with javascript disabled.
- Thus the blogs examples provided might be rewritten.
- I am currently using the code (at the end) on my site. BUT I WOULD REALLY LOVE to get more info about the parameters that can be passed to delicious. Apparently &n is for displaying the network. I’ve been looking desperately to the correct parameters for tags, neither do &tag or &tags generate the expected result. And what are the possible values for &v?
- The code you may seen working in the left column of http://www.multi-sources.fr (this is the php code in a mambo template):
==================
I can’t post code here, this dummy blog just says “This blog does not allow HTML comments.” whatever I try to “sanitize” my code
==================
Additional notes:
- as per delicious, the url arguments need to be utf8 encoded, and they need to be “urlsafe” as well, hence the htmlentities(urlencode(utf8_encode(trim())))
- my line for generating tags is ready, but useless until I find what to put instead of &tags. Note that in HTML the tags are comma separated, while in delicious hey are space separated, hence the replacement of commas by spaces and multiple spaces by a single space (to be great, we should also remove redundant tag words… but this will be done later)
- check with your php application where are placed the page title, the page meta-decription, and the page meta-keyword, and put that instead of what I have put here.

Great feature
Christian Tietze | Aug 13 2006 at 8:30 am
Good idea. I’d like to be able to edit the displayed text though, or simply use a hard-coded link (”HTML export” isntead of JS or so) because my readers and I are German, hence an link in Englisch somehow stands out :)
tor | Aug 14 2006 at 12:43 am
Buena idea, especialmente la de implementar linkrolls y tagrolls para blog’s.
alex | Aug 14 2006 at 8:18 am
Where is the HTML code though? I clicked on it but I end up being added to myself.
moonbatmedia | Aug 15 2006 at 10:31 am
Just added this feature. I’m sure it will help!
Britta | Aug 15 2006 at 11:56 am
Fibo: You can’t pass tags in the “save this” feature — this is so that people use the tags most meaningful to them rather than to the publisher. Christian (and others): Yes, we’re working on an HTML version for people who can’t use javascript or would prefer not to. Alex: It’s in the grey box at the bottom of the Network Badges page.
flashmastermike | Aug 15 2006 at 5:45 pm

I just added myself.

it’s about FRIKKIN TIME!!! ya lost me about 6 months ago because of it– and a sad day it was for me, as i so wanted to support the underdog. going to the other guy was just ultimately “more fun” because i could share it w/ everyone so easily.
i’ll try it next time i find some white space which needs filled. kudos to your developers for bringing it up to speed. i’m sure it’s a very nice feature.

hey guys — feature request — any chance you could add OPML export of a user’s network?
Daniel Markham | Sep 5 2006 at 6:46 pm
Why do the options for the network badge appear in Safari on: http://del.icio.us/help/networkbadges ?
Also, try as I might, I cannot seem to control the look and feel of the network badge using my stylesheet. Nothing I add to the classes that result from the script change the look of the thing at all. Any suggestions?
