double helping

The del.icio.us help pages are suddenly far more extensive and useful! They were getting a bit out of date, so I updated them and added much more detail. Explore them, learn something new, and let me know if there’s anything more I should include; the pages are still a work in progress.

Here’s one to start with: what is del.icio.us, anyway? And even if you’re already familiar with del.icio.us, here are a couple sections you might want to check out: the FAQs (full of real questions from users, not just things that I guessed you might be wondering) and neat unofficial tools (a gentle introduction to some of the most popular ones).

There is an amazing amount of community documentation about del.icio.us: people blogging and talking about features and uses, explaining this sometimes-mysterious site to everyone else. My goal is to supplement all of that with more explanations in a place that’s easy to find. I hope you enjoy it.

While most pages in del.icio.us are better for being very light on graphics, I think it would be a good idea to fill the blank space under the section headings with icons. Being able to recognize icons is very useful when using the help pages a lot. There’s a lot of free ones around. You could even use SVG to get really small files.

    Brainstorming for sections:

Getting started: A baby face? :) Maybe this section doesn’t need an icon, since it’s one which users are likely to visit only once.

Bookmarking: A star, maybe, like in IE? Or the “TAG” icon from the del.icio.us Firefox extension.

Sharing: Two people with a double arrow between them, roadsign style.

Browsing: A directory structure. I know it doesn’t completely reflect the del.icio.us structure, but it’s a metaphor people are used to.

Navigation: An itinerary overlaid on a map.

FAQ: A question mark or a big “Q & A”. An “I” sign like they have for tourist information.

Advanced: A cogwheel? A computer chip? Something technical.

    Tools and toys: A hammer.

Developers: Some guy crouched in front of his monitor, hands on the keyboard.

    About del.icio.us: The del.icio.us logo.

Talking of “neat unofficial tools” and third party tools, I think you could add this del.icio.us tools collection. Its been regularly updating for over a year now.

Any chance of an update sometime soon for the del.icio.us firefox extension? The current official extension isn’t compatible with FF 2.0…
