making Firefox more del.icio.us
For the past few months, we’ve been working on a new del.icio.us Bookmarks extension for Firefox. We quietly released it to the addons.mozilla.org community to see what would happen, and we’ve been constantly working on it to make it great for our core community of users. Since that launch, we’ve received loads of great feedback and have been working non stop to address the biggest requests from the community.
After months of hard work, I’m pleased to officially announce the new extension. It has the same two buttons as the old one, but they do so much more. The biggest change is that we now integrate all your bookmarks right in the browser. From the new sidebar you can sort and search your bookmarks instantly, view tag intersections, and even modify your bookmarks. The new toolbar is also great - you can select what tags you want to see in your toolbar, show all the bookmarks with a given tag, and even view your bundles. Of course, livemarks and keywords are both fully supported.
If you still love the classic extension, not to worry, it’s still around. Otherwise, visit our help page to learn more about the extension or just go ahead and install it! Feedback is always welcome, so come on down to our group to talk about the extension some more.

I played with this for a couple weeks and was disappointed. There were a couple problems that I think need to be addressed before it’s as useful as it looks:
(1) In Firefox on OSX, this extension conflicts with Firefox bookmarks. I was unable to add or export bookmarks until I disabled the new delicious extension.
(2) I had to log into delicious MUCH more often than I do now.
(3) I missed the one-click ability to go to my delicious bookmarks with the icon in the upper right. It would be nice to retain that functionality.
(4) Searching my delicious listings from within the extension wasn’t really useful. I couldn’t do a search for items that have APPLE AND OSX in them… by default it searches for any listing with either word. That’s a shame - it would be nice to be able to easily search for something that has 3 or 4 specific tags to narrow down my large list of links.
(5) Search results are, what, alphabetical? Wouldn’t it make more sense to list them with most recent on top? Or at least give me the option to sort different ways.
I’m a BIG fan of delicious and look forward to growing with it in the coming years. But for now, I’ll stick with the classic extension.
Keep up the good work!

This is looking great. Thank you!
However, I do have to point out a small thing that will be a major headache for me when bookmarking. The bookmarking form’s focus defaults to the name textbox and not the tags textbox. To me, it makes more sense for the focus to be on the tags textbox, that way I can type in my tags and hit enter. Quick and easy just like before! Thanks!
osunick | Apr 5 2007 at 5:00 pm
Hi David,
Totally agree and it’s actually on the bug list. Thanks!
Nick | Apr 5 2007 at 5:05 pm
Hi Kevin,
1. This bug is fixed in this release, sorry about that.
2. That shouldn’t be happening- we use the same cookies at the website
3. We’re working on bringing back that functionality
4. You can do this- we have related tags in the new extension and you can enter tags separated by a “+” to get the AND search.
Thanks,
Nick

I really like how this is coming along. However I miss the functionality of being able to click the Delicious button and having the ability to right click from there without having to open it in the sidebar. Now if you could let me choose an option to always have it open in the sidebar, that would be a satisfactory and now that I think about it, preferred alternative. I just don’t like having to click several times to edit my del.icio.us bookmarks. Also I’ve been waiting, and hoping, for a way to rename tags within the extension. The site’s rename tag thing is an awful lot of trouble. Especially for those of us who have too many. I’d like to pare it down, but it is a daunting task the way that drop down box works. I have to scroll, scroll, scroll, scroll, scroll, select, type, enter and that’s only one. Then I have to repeat that over and over and over again. It’s just too much. Overall though, I’m still very pleased with the extension. Just those two changes would make life grand. :)

I use my del.icio.us bookmarks daily and would like to synchronise with my Firefox bookmarks - but there’s a big problem. My Firefox bookmarks use the old style hierarchy, so if I want to access my news bookmarks I go to Bookmarks>News. However my news folder in my Firefox bookmarks has a lot of subfolders - the import from del.icio.us doesn’t take that into account, so when I click on the news tag I get all the bookmarks in my news folder, not just the top level I wanted.
It’s late at night here, so hopefully that made sense!!!!!!!!
Gregor J. Rothfuss | Apr 5 2007 at 9:54 pm
is it just me, or does the tagging popup no longer autocomplete tags? as a avid tagger, that is a deal breaker.
Marc | Apr 6 2007 at 1:16 am
This is absolutely brilliant. The del.icio.us team did an awesome job on this - especially the vastly more full-featured and performant sidebar!
Note: Patrick can feel free to quote me on the above ;-)
Seriously, I’m glad to see this out in the wild and getting lots of positive feedback. I noticed that it’s on the Digg front page which is pretty cool.
Thomas Peklak | Apr 6 2007 at 2:49 am
Great work. That’s exactly the way I like to access my bookmarks. Thanks a lot
Ray | Apr 6 2007 at 3:44 am
I love the new features of the bookmark, but find it totally useless because I can’t see the list other than in alphabetical order. It’s why I still use del.icio.us, because when I want to look for a bookmark, I usually want to see it in chronological order, not alphabetical. There should definitely be an option for sorting the list chronologically.
Mourner | Apr 6 2007 at 4:55 am
Absolutely amazing work. The new extension is a joy to use.
One thing though - I REALLY miss the ability to configure sorting of the search results (e.g. I strongly prefer sorting by date to alphabetical, that’s a big inconvenience).

Hey people!
What about something for Safari? That would be fantastic.

How do I remove the toolbar? I want to sync, but I just have too many toolbars…
mediaeater | Apr 6 2007 at 8:35 am
Is there no predictive text for existing tags??!
I see network tags but none of mine - is this just me
Say its not so - also no when you click your icon
your taken to a popup and not to del.icio.us
what gives - kinda of disapointed -
I am afraid to see what happens when I load in
10K plus bookmarks also.

When the extension imported my FF bookmarks into del.icio.us, it also imported my FF “Live” bookmarks, tagging them as such:
[livemark:http://donkey.csh.rit.edu/wiki/index.php?title=Special:Recentchanges&feed=atom
When I try to delete these tags on the del.icio.us site, it says the tag was deleted, but it never seems to go away…
Sunil | Apr 6 2007 at 11:37 am
This is great. I’m a big del.icio.us fan, so this should streamline my experience.
I imported all my Firefox bookmarks and see them when I’m on the actual site, but I don’t see them in the plug-in menus. They are “not shared”. Do they need to be public for me to be able to see them using the plug-in?
Nate | Apr 6 2007 at 12:05 pm
Thanks for this great tool, it is very helpful but there are a couple of things that are frustrating about it:
1. When I make a new bookmark, the Keywords attribute does not seem to come across to different computers. I use keywords extensively to do quick searches in the address bar. Is that a property that is only stored locally? It would sure be handy if that were stored server side. (and if it is stored there it would be nice if it synced with different computers)
2. When I select a tag in the upper pane, the only way I can find to clear the selection (so all of my bookmarks are shown again in the lower pane) is to type something in the search bar and then erase it. It would be more helpful if there were an “all” tag, or a right click to clear, or just being able to hit “esc” to clear the selection.
dish | Apr 6 2007 at 12:51 pm
Today I cant change any tags of existing bookmarks. Not only with new and old plugins but even at website.
I think this problem connected with sync function.
pVeera | Apr 6 2007 at 12:56 pm
Come on!
I install this thing and it takes over my browser’s bookmarking operations!
I dint like the notion of that happening. Its better if you make a special shortcut for posting to del.icio.us. I noticed that you have a special shortcut for posting locally, but it should be the other way round.
I definitely want many pages to stay with me on my box and not on del.icio.us, I know you allow private posts, but its no way the same.
CW | Apr 6 2007 at 1:29 pm
If only delicious would import my bookmarks from its own export I would love to use this feature. Perhaps now that they have finished work on the new extension they can address their import bugs.
Nick | Apr 6 2007 at 1:54 pm
pVeera,
You can switch the key bindings so that your ctrl-d shortcut bookmarks locally. Tools-Options-del.icio.us-Advanced. You have to restart your browser for the binding changes to take effect.

Nice work! I like the way it shows related tags.
One thing I miss is being able to easily jump to my bookmarks at del.icio.us; with the old extension, I could just middle-click on the del.icio.us icon and bring up the site in a new tab. (I use Tab Mix Plus to fine-tune middle clicking behavior.) Now I click on the icon and have to mouse all the way down to the bottom of the screen to get the hyperlink, and middle-clicking doesn’t open it in a new tab. Moving the “username on del.icio.us” to the top of the menu would simplify it; I’m not sure what would be involved in making the hyperlink respond to right-click and middle-click like a normal one.
Even more cool than the scrollable tag list would be a tag cloud, so the tags you use more often would stand out by size; clicking on a tag could then light up all the related tags that you currently get with the twist-down in the linear list.
Michael Massing | Apr 6 2007 at 2:44 pm
Magnolia South (if y’all will excuse me jumping in like this), I agree that “live” renaming would be great. In the short term, you can cut down on your scrolling by clicking on the dropdown box and typing without pause the first 3 or 4 characters of the tag you want to rename, then scrolling or arrowing down from that if you land higher in the list than you want. Developers, I’ve noticed that on other sites with dropdowns, input has now become less restrictive, and one can often type in an entire entry in a dropdown context. This would seem to be the wave of the present - if live renaming is not immediately deliverable, expanding the entry that your dropdown(s) accept might make the process less of a pain in the meanwhile. Best to all, M.
Michael Massing | Apr 6 2007 at 3:01 pm
*raises hand* stephen, in the short term I would suggest using the + (AND function) to filter your news results down to the specific sources you have in mind. (By the way, I don’t think it’s documented, but at least in the header filter at the top of each tag results page, a space works as well as a “+”.) Beyond that, in my own quite new and limited experience, I find that a tag-based system tends to flatten out my hierarchies, but in a good way. I use bundles for a kind of mid-level hierarchical framework, and leave unbundled tags that are either broad and across-the-board, like “queer”, or so narrow as to maybe have a short shelf life before they are subsumed into a broader tag, like “U3″. Taking advantage of this basic structure, plus ANDed searches, I’ve cut the number of tags I use by about a third compared to my old folder-based taxonomy, with its inherent redundancy. Hope this helps. Best, M.

I am comfortable with just two del.icio.us buttons on the tool bar. Don’t want to add any side bar or anything additional. Just make this optional.

An impressive martialling of functionality … mebbe too much (not arbitrary, just, well, assertive in its claims to realestate) but wow … impressive.
Now, about “import”. *cough*

But: “Sync” seems to work fine. “Import” … it’s been spinning for 2 hours now.

I am using the new version so long that I forgot that it was not a real ‘official’ extension :-) I already recommended some time ago in my german Firefox article: http://sankt-georg.info/artikel/27/Empfehlung-Firefox-Internet-Browser-Sicherheit-Update
With Ctrl-B the tagging of bookmarks becomes a powerful tool directly in the browser.
What I miss? I would love to have back the old auto-cutoff for notes. The letter counter is great but I don’t always want to edit my notes. Auto-cutoff would be great if the entry is OKed.
Great job!
Joost Schuur | Apr 6 2007 at 7:28 pm
I’m seeing some issues when importing/editing bookmarks. First off, it uses text from the notes field as tag material, and when I try and edit them (either locally via the extension or on del.icio.us itself, they seem to revert back to their state before editing right after.
PaulC | Apr 6 2007 at 7:58 pm
I really like the two level hierarchy. But how do I view my url’s in the sidebar now? When I expand a Tag, I get related Tags, but there is no way to expand the related Tag to see the url’s. ??
So I have 55 url’s tagged “boat” with 22 related Tags, I would love to open a related tag and see the small number of urls. So no more just cruising my bookmarks. Bummer.
I honestly don’t see the value of this new version without the ability to see the urls in the sidebar. Guess I have to go back to the previous version.
MagnoliaSouth | Apr 6 2007 at 8:39 pm
Hi Michael Massing, thanks for your input. The problem with your suggestion is when I’m checking for errors or similar names and renaming those types of tags, jumping to it is impossible if I don’t see it first. I mean, if I knew about it to begin with I wouldn’t have named them that way. ;) Now I could go back and forth between My Bookmarks page and the rename drop down list, but then that begins another headache too. Just a simple live renaming within the extension is a much needed improvement. Additionally I think the site could be fixed as well. A list (not a drop down box), similar to my bookmarks page, with a little box or link next to it that says “rename” would be ideal as well. I think both of these improvements are definitely needed.
MagnoliaSouth | Apr 6 2007 at 8:41 pm
For those of you who are frustrated with seeing related tags and not their URLs, if you click on the actual related tag, the URLs show up in the box below.
MagnoliaSouth | Apr 6 2007 at 8:47 pm
Sorry, I clicked too soon. I do apologize for yet ANOTHER post. I was going to add that this is not a good function. I preferred being able to view them all in the top pane because I could expand several related tags and compare each those URLs for a variety of reasons. As it is now, I have to switch back and forth for comparison.

I have multiple delicious accounts - personal, business, and the occasional special project. Does this release allow one to manage and post to multiple accounts?
ben tremblay | Apr 7 2007 at 5:42 pm
If you ever read this: you can reduce your load and improve our service (read: you have me pulling my hair out).
Delete … you force me to reload my entire list for each and every single deletion? Why not just a list that would allow me to select all the deletions at once. *Good grief … and I’m outta work. keerist.*
NB: I took the plunge and “imported” my bookmarks. (That’s wrong … /you/ imported them, I /exported/ them.) Result?
Now I have a lovely and totally unusable del.icio.us site.
Dozens and dozens of meaningless tags. Why? I can only guess.
I’m willing to do my stretch of heavy lifting. You have given us a lovely service and the 1.5 plugin is great, and I appreciate that.
But really … forms? We aren’t even putting sane Web1.0 forms in place?!
That breaks my heart.

This is something I’ve been hoping for for a long time, and while I am impressed, there is one obvious feature that is *almost* supported, but not quite.
Currently, if I drag and drop a URL into a tag folder in the delicious toolbar, it brings up the tagging dialog, as if I had just clicked the Tag toolbar button. This is the wrong behavior. What should happen is that it should automatically tag the URL with the tag that I dropped it on - no need for the dialog. If I want to apply multiple tags, I’ll just hit the Tag button, I won’t drag and drop.
It would be wonderfully convenient to keep my most common Tags in the toolbar and to be able to drop things onto them. Please don’t force everything to go through the Tag dialog.
HDR Photography | Apr 8 2007 at 2:36 am
This would be great if users could even save my site URL. I have tried contacting delicious three times now explaining that the bookmarking doesn’t work for my visitors, with no response.
Ben Tremblay | Apr 8 2007 at 11:21 am
After hours spent cleaning up the horrid tags that got slapped onto my bookmarks when I uploaded (You imported; I exported.) there’s still one major glitch: only the links that were there previously are Shared.
I used upload and put myself through this ghastly process because I had a very large bookmark collection, years in the making, and I wanted to safeguard it. Your service is really wonderful … it seemed like the time. I regret it, now.
The many hundreds of links I uploaded are set Not Shared.
“How do I share all my imported bookmarks?
To make a bookmark public, click the “share” link located on the right of its description. We don’t have a “share all” button right now for a few reasons: to make sure you know exactly what you’re sharing, to encourage you to edit your imported links, and to prevent abuse.”
I need to manually change each and every one? That’s preposterous.
But your FAQ doesn’t tell the whole truth. It isn’t wrong, just incomplete. You have the Privacy option. Set with a checkbox, yes?
I turned privacy off. My links still do not show up.
That’s a lot of time to waste. All I have now is a service that’s less usable because so many tags got frobbed.
cheers

I had ~20 tabs open when installing the newest extension. Upon restarting Firefox, only the first two came up; the rest were opened but blank with no URL specified. I lost this history. If this issue can be confirmed, please try to fix so other users don’t encounter this problem.

Ed | Apr 10 2007 at 10:53 pm
One minor complaint. I have several “bookmarklets” (small snippets of code stored as a bookmark which execute in the context of the current page when the bookmark is clicked).
I use Tab Mix Plus and have it configured to open bookmarks in new tabs, however the expected behavior for bookmarklets is maintained even with this setting - that is, processing in the context of the current window.
However, if I set up my collection of bookmarklets as a favorite, and view the toolbar in “Tags View”, clicking on a bookmarklet opens it in a new window, which is meaningless in this context. I’ve noticed that clicking del.icio.us bookmarks from the sidebar opens them in the current tab, but for all bookmarks. Neither behavior is quite right, and it’s the only thing keeping me from ditching my local bookmarks completely…
Thanks for the hard work on this great site, and this otherwise great extension.
Christian Tietze | Apr 12 2007 at 6:38 pm
I’d like to have capital letters printed as such in tags :(
“itunes” and “iTunes” look a lot more different when viewed in a list, so capital letters are nice to distinguish between the words. Abbreviation like “fsf” for “Free Software Foundation” look less strange when written as “FSF”, too, I think. Applies to a lot of exaples (NeverWinterNights, BaldursGate, …).

But having the ability to see my bookmarks right from Firefox is a great feature, and one that will make it a lot more convenient to use del.icio.us as my main bookmark manager. Keep up the good work.

I liked the new plugin UI, but it is very, very slow… I think the problem may be that I tend to use many more tags than the average user. A feature to set a minimum count for a tag to be displayed, like the one found on the web interface, would probably help a lot.

This is incredibly useful, simple, and slick - great job. The “most visited” feature amazingly automates what I used to do by hand with Firefox’s bookmark toolbar. Instead of having to constantly update those quick links with my favorite sites at any given time, you all do the heavy lifting for me. Genius.
I’d love to see some new features built off of my most visited history. Others may freak out about privacy, but I’m more than happy to share my clickstream behavior in exchange for new functionality (my personal browsing trends, recommendations based on sites I frequent, etc)… particularly when it’s controlled by the sites I tag publicly.
Rock on.

I have a feature request: add a NOT condition to search. I can get AND with + and OR with a space in the sidebar search but I’d also like to exclude tags when I’m listing my bookmarks. Example: code+java-games
This works in the search on the main site but actually not with the tag selection.

I like Del.icio.us and use it a lot. Lately I’ve found myself writing a few hacks to get certain things done, and I thought these might be useful features to add into your Add On.
Support the transformation of bookmarked RSS feeds. I currently bookmark a number of blogs and news feeds and I use Sage to view them. But it would be nice to be able to associate an XSLT with a node in the tree. This would allow me to transform the feed or transform a folder of feeds.
I’d like to be able to upload the XSLT that way I can access it from anywhere.
Keep up the good work.

I’m sorry to report that the delicious toolbar when configured to display bundles is quite unstable - it loses both macro and micro sort orders: at least twice since this release. I did not submit a service request on this because I already have submitted one about bundles in the toolbar, which may or may not include this issue. The reply indicated that you were aware of a number of issues with the toolbar. I should be glad to submit this as a service request if it is helpful to your process. Thanks, M.

Hi,
I don’t know if this is the place to post a bug report here, but I can’t find any place else to do so.
Recent problem with tagrolls:
I noticed that the browsing url for tags such as C++ has been changed into http://del.icio.us/pongbablog/“C++”, but when I hit the C++ tag in my tagrolls, I’m redirected to http://del.icio.us/pongbablog/C++ (without the quotation marks). This makes me not be able to browse a tag through tagroll!
If it helps illustrate the problem, below is my blog, and just hit the ‘C++’ tag on the sidebar and see what comes up.

One of the most useful things about the Foxylicious extension is the ability to ‘create folder hierarchy from tag combinations’, which makes managing a large collection of bookmarks much easier. It would be great if this could be added as an option to the sidebar.
Julius | Apr 25 2007 at 6:31 am
Sorry for replying to my own post, but having had another look, it seems that Foxylicious only creates two levels of hierarchy, which this extension already provides. It still seems to me that it might be useful to have the option of more than two levels of hierarchy though…

My number one feature request at the moment would be a way to display “links for me” somehow in the browser. Now I have to check my delicious page just to see if anyone’s posted some interesting stuff.
Number two would be seeing what my network is up to.
Nick | Apr 26 2007 at 6:52 pm
Olli,
You can do this now, just subscribe to your Links for you RSS feed and display it in your del.icio.us toolbar as a livemark. This works great and we’re working on making this integration tighter in the future. Thanks!

Interesting. Having run this release since before you launched it here, I just installed an update in response to a prompt from Firefox. I’m seeing more responsive redraws of the tag clouds, and apparent resolution of a longstanding mystery: supposedly empty “deadwood” tags that would not go away. Well, according to today’s behavior, there was a reasons they wouldn’t go away: they weren’t empty, but neither were they displaying their associated links/posts. Something about your recent tweak, and/or my dumping some links last night and consolidating some bundles today, seems to have revealed these previously hidden links, so I could finally properly de- or re-tag them. Thanks, guys, I know I’ve been ragging on you a lot about the spam (ahem), but I do appreciate your constant efforts to debug and improve. Best to all, M.

I don’t like the new extension: it’s too intrusive. In fact I don’t like that I can’t choose to inlcude “hide this menu” item in my firefox bookmarks, I don’t like that the shortcuts crtl+D and ctrl+B are assigned to the extension, and that I can’t choose the menu position. I would like to choose all these things!

Toolbars are more clutter, i like to keep them to a minimum. Usually less is better.
