how to explain delicious to your parents

One of the many great things about working on del.icio.us is hearing from people who really grok what we do and why we’re doing it. This enthusiasm takes many forms, and we’ve definitely been blown away by interest in our preview as well as the overwhelming response for our old swag.

It’s all great, and it’s extra-great when someone creates something that’s extra-special. For all of you who struggle to explain Social Bookmarking to your family and friends, there’s now an awesome video for you:

Many thanks to Lee and Sachi Lefever at Common Craft for their efforts here. So, next time you’re trying to explaining why this “Social Bookmarking” thing is all the rage, you now know what video to play.

That’s a such great video, as are all their videos. I’ve been using it for months.

Why such a long wait to post it?

  • engtech  |  Oct 19 2007 at 9:08 pm

Ok, not as much of a delay as I thought. Strange this post is only showing up in Google Reader now?

We just switched the blog from http://blog.del.icio.us/ to http://blog.delicious.com/ (and from Typepad to Wordpress), which might be the cause of any recent weirdness.

Can you please never use “grok” in a sentence again? It sounds utterly, embarrassingly, stupid.

We’ve got plenty of words. Everything that exists that we know already has a word. There’s no need to invent new ones for things that have been around since humans existed.

I call whoever uses this term gets sent to their room forever without dessert.

    Thank you.

  • MikoNoNyte  |  Nov 4 2007 at 6:16 pm

I’m sorry, but as a 50-something, explaining to “parents” is an oxy-moron.

So is this whole concept that older people are stupid apes.
    Social awareness issues, children.
We’re not dinosaurs. Our generation invented this tech, so hush.

  • Alan Jacobs  |  Nov 4 2007 at 6:19 pm

FYI, Scotty the M, the verb “grok” is about 45 years old. It was coined by Robert A. Heinlein in his novel Stranger in a Strange Land.

And, Delicious Groksters, it would be really nice to get an update on the new interface. It has worked well for me, and I’d like to see it replace the old one ASAP.

Oh, this is really great. I had heard about delicious but did not really know what it was. I finally got the time to explore and I think this will be very usefull to me. I want to suggest everyone at work check this out. Im single and my ex’s kids are gone so I dont get exposed to whats new like I should but I do love to Google and search.

ps my coworkers may know already about this because we produce online television shows but I am so embarassed I did not know how much time this could save me.

stellarvision tv has videos for business owners to show case products, services and informaiton. I think the producer of this video should check out what we do because that was a very cool video.

It was clear and easy to remember. Great job everyone.

At any given time i have 10 more tabs opened up in ff. when i have to move, i have to save my session in session manager, which is good, but not useful. you know where i’m getting at. delicious should have a save session feature! or at least save window feature.

Great for the university-level Social Media course I’m currently teaching! Just what we needed. I hope to find other tutorials on social media at this site. Another video is needed to better explain the networking feature and how to add people to your network. Also, in a computer labor other public access computer that doesn’t permit users to add the buttons, they have to post their URLs manually (unless there’s another way I don’t know about).

    Hi,
This is an awesome video…kudos to the brains that are behind such a simple and creative work. I would luv to see delicious if it would be more interactive than it is now…i really think that there are many things missing already in this out of the box application. For instance, if i want to get to a link that ive tagged months before…i need to waste a hell lot of time to get to that one. The tagging system is great but, here we should give more importance to the time taken to closeup a link.
I believe that the great team behind delicious already has something in store for a totally innovative functionality….and i expect more changes in the application.
    Lets make delicious more delicious……:)

    Cheers,
    Mysticpixels

Hey, this is exactly i was looking for :)

BTW- you are still missing one point - The private bookmarking feature.

Many people are scared to bookmark because they think that any other person on the internet can see what they are doing. Many people do not like some one tracking them.

In enterprise - where intranet (within firewall to company) sites are many to remember (e.g. collaboration site-links to documents, company policy documents etc) , where one has to use laptop/desktop or other servers-The private bookmarking is very useful.

The presentation is very good in the video. Appreciate sharing it to the rest of the world :)
