Firefox 3, del.icio.us, and you
Firefox 3 users, rejoice! Today I’m pleased to announce a beta release of an enhanced version of our Firefox Add-on for del.icio.us that now has full Firefox 3 support while retaining Firefox 2 compatibility. While it is largely similar to the release version of our Firefox Add-on, there are a few nifty new features:
- Jump to Tag feature (press ctrl-shift-y) allows you to quickly access tags and
bookmarks using the keyboard - New layout for saving bookmarks
- Preferences now in a separate dialog under Tools (which also can be
invoked via the prefs button on the FF Add-ons pane) - Status bar indicators for network activity, new links for you, and the del.icio.us website
- Classic mode for users who just want simple buttons without the overhead of sync
Like any beta release this Firefox Add-on is meant to provide you with a preview of upcoming features. Some of the features and interface choices, like Jump To Tag, are experimental and may change before we officially launch and we’re eager to hear your feedback on the changes, especially if you think we can do certain things better. If you have issues or comments, please let us know in the delicious-firefox-extension Yahoo! Group.
If you’re not already familiar with the extension, take a look at our Quick Tour which explains the basics. It hasn’t been updated to reflect all the new features but is a great way to get started.
Thanks for helping us test- we’ve built and upgraded these Add-ons based on lots of user feedback and we hope you enjoy trying them out.

[…] The del.icio.us team has been working on a new beta add-on for the also-still-in-beta Firefox 3 to give users easier and quicker access to information. While maintaining full compatibility with the previous add-on for Firefox 2, the latest version offers a few new features, which they’ve detailed in their post . […]

Its great to see my favorite addon get updated. But it doesn’t sync with my existing list of bookmarks. It only shows the new ones and the new ones don’t show on the del.icio.us website. I tried forcing it to sync, but get a message saying ‘Failed to sync’.
Matt | Apr 30 2008 at 1:16 pm
Grumble… where are the options to disable bookmark synching and to hide the new sidebar button in the toolbar? I don’t want those features, I just want the tag button.
Is what I want called “classic mode”? Will that mode always exist? I would prefer some simple checkboxes. Thanks.

Hi Matt,
The classic mode was created for you. Simply go to Tools.. Delicious Options.. Advanced.. then Classic Mode. We don’t plan on removing this option as we know there are many who want basic functionality. We will probably move this to the Delicious menu in an upcoming release as it’s a bit buried right now. Thanks for the feedback.

Awesome. This is great to hear. I can finally move off the memory hog that is Firefox 2.
Is there any chance of a del.icio.us add on for Safari? Maybe even just a bookmarklet that has a responsiveness and behavior similar to that of the extension?
Thanks!

This is nice, and I guess there is a lot of work behind this (beta) update… but to me it feels completely useless.
I started using del.icio.us because I wanted:
1. a tool to manage quite a lot of bookmarks (managing 100+ or 500+ bookmarks in a conventional web browser is a pain), with search capabilities;
2. a way to access those bookmarks from different computers.
(I’m not really into the social bookmarking thing, I just wanted a tool for ME.)
Then comes Firefox 3, with bookmark management made simple even for hundreds of bookmarks (and using the «star» button in FF3 is quicker than using a «tag» button that sprouts a del.icio.us window for saving the bookmark). And one great feature: just type works or tags in the address bar, and there is your bookmark.
So right now what I want is a way to integrate del.icio.us with native FF3 bookmarks. Like just adding a private/public button to Firefox bookmarks, and syncing every bookmark in FF3 with del.icio.us and the other way round.
I’m not sure this is a reasonable wish. :)
But a del.icio.us extension that bypasses the built-in FF3 bookmarks and del.icio.us bookmarks that can’t be used from the awesome bar… this feels like a missed opportunity. Maybe some time in the future, when FF3 is stable and widely used.
Meanwhile, I may have to check out both the del.icio.us HTML export and the FF3 HTML import. They don’t seem to use the same format since tags and notes are lost in the process.

Hi Kyle,
We do have the basic bookmarklets for Safari but as for an official Safari extension, since Apple doesn’t officially support browser extensions for Safari, it’s a bit tricky for us to do. Glad you like the FF3 extension!
Florent,
We’re looking hard at building in more FF3 specific features for the extension. Each beta FF3 release has required rewrites of significant parts of the codebase, so this release is largely about keeping the existing functionality intact for our many loyal extension users. Also, retaining FF2 compatibility was a priority, as we wanted them to benefit from the new feature set without forcing an upgrade. Rest assured that we’ll do more in the future.

l0b0 | Apr 30 2008 at 11:43 pm
Thanks, good to have a compatible version. A few things which should really be fixed:
- The bookmarking window should never be on top. I keep adding tags sporadically while reading / watching a page, and minimizing / maximizing in addition to changing focus is double the hassle.
- Please don’t mess with the case of the tags. Having them all set to lower case restricts the possibility to add semantics to the case (e.g., “windows” for a glass shop and “Windows” for the OS), and it’s a really arbitrary restriction. A lot of tags are also easier to read with caps, such as NewYork or JohnArchibaldDoe.
- The “Delete bookmark” link is very useful.
- Preloading of existing tags / notes for existing bookmarks.
A non-critical issue is that I’m currently unable to operate the bookmarking window without a mouse. Specifically, the URL, “do not share” and tags are not part of the tabbing sequence.
l0b0 | Apr 30 2008 at 11:44 pm
Oh yeah, and auto-complete suggestions for tags would be nice to have back.
l0b0 | Apr 30 2008 at 11:57 pm
Now, this is weird. It looks like both auto-complete and fetching of existing bookmark data depends on the /local/ bookmarks. So I guess they’ll work when using the bookmark synchronization, but I don’t, so it should interact with the server as before.

Like others, I have been waiting for this to switch over to FF3. I am having a bit of an annoyance regarding the way I handle cookies. I turn cookies off by default in the browser preferences and use an extension (currently Cookie Monster) to white list the sites I want to be able to save a cookie. Now with your new extension I get a dialog every time I open FF asking me to enable cookies. You should have either an option to “not remind me again” or you should check the exceptions list for the domain you require to be allowed to save cookies.
Keep up the great work!

Derek | May 1 2008 at 8:41 am
Thanks for this add-on. Very useful!
I do have one complaint though: in my buttons menu I have a del.icio.us icon, a del.icio.us bookmarks icon, and a tag icon. That’s three buttons, all useful. But then there’s another del.icio.us icon I can’t get out of the status bar that seems simply to take me to the del.icio.us homepage. This is overkill.
Please allow us the option to remove that icon just as you have the option to remove the network and links for you reminder buttons.
And also, thanks, Nick, for taking the time to read and respond to these — pretty refreshing to see for a product owned by such a large company!

Great update to an invaluable addon. HOWEVER, can you PLEASE give us an option to stop the ‘check if cookies are disabled’ on firefox startup.
I have cookies disabled globally, and allow cookies on a site by site basis (whitelist) using the CS Lite cookie manager addon. So I have delicious.com (and del.icio.us) whitelisted, and therefore am sick of having to click “disable cookies” every time I open firefox.
I understand why you have this prompt, and I understand I am a minority, but please just give me an option so that I can stop this prompt. (put it in about:config if not in the gui)

Thanks! was waiting for this ever since the first Firefox 3 beta came out.
One change from the old del.icio.us extension that is causing an issue is the “cookies must be enabled” error message. I’m not using cookies, but I have exceptions defined for specific websites, including del.icio.us. So I would suggest to either avoid showing the error message when an exception is defined, or allow the user to disable this message.

I use an extension, that enables cookies for specific domains, while keeping cookies disabled in general.
Of course i enabled it for the icio.us, but the extension keeps asking me to enable cookies in order to use the extension. This is bullshit of course, so get rid of it.

I use tags extensively to track research for my writing. I am lost without auto-completion of my tags and a listing of my existing tags when tagging a new post. Is there any way to bring this feature back as an option? It may slow the browser just a bit, but auto-completion saves me tons of time in thinking of the right tags and quickly entering them. I find del.ico.us much slower to use without auto-completion and listing of tags.

So, when you click on the thing that says “Manage tag bundles…” you get a window that says, “Add and arrange your tag bundles to make them appear in the Bookmarks menu and in your Bookmarks toolbar.”
To me, this implies that clicking “remove” on that window will remove it *from the toolbar*. Actually, it removes your bundle from del.icio.us entirely. There is no alert box or anything like, “are you sure?” I realize this is on me for playing with pre-release software, but this cost me many many hours of work.
That’s my only gripe so far; otherwise I’m pretty impressed with the functionality.

You guys may want to look at the del.icio.us complete extension for Firefox and how it implements putting in tags for your bookmarks.
I personally would want to see that feature of the official addon as I would prefer to see all the tags I have already put in instead of being suggested to me by autocompletion.
MichaelKVegfruit | May 12 2008 at 10:11 pm
Great extension, but the poorly designed cookie check is close to a dealbreaker for me. I can’t understand why a check is needed at startup, rather than when you first try to use the extensions; more so, I can’t see how you can write an extension this good, but not be able to set it up just to check that its own cookies are enabled, rather than that cookies are enabled globally.
I get that there’s an urge to make sure users aren’t surprised to find the extension doesn’t work if they’ve turned it’s cookies off. But once you’ve seen the warning once, surely you should be able to turn it off.
For the paranoid, it gives the impression that you’re trying to inconvenience users into leaving cookies globally enabled, which reflects poorly on your respect for user privacy.

Hi,
Just started using del.icio.us and find it intriguing. I was wondering though if the firefox plugin will integrate more tightly with other browser features such as the AwsomeBar(tm) where you can type tags directly into the url field to find bookmarked/tagged pages. I love that functionality and sort of uses it all the time for my old bookmarks.
Other than that I haven’t really explored everything enough to make more suggestions.
Cheers!

I guess here’s a good a place to ask as any (correct me if I’m wrong, please):
I am an extensive user of Del.icio.us(we’re talking 10’s of thousands of bookmarks), and really really want to use the bookmarks functionality from within Firefox. However, it only seems to find tags that have already sync’ed, and the bottom right corner always just says “Bookmark synching in progress…”
Given my high usage and the apparent snail’s-pace synching, am I doomed to forever be dissatisfied with this one little (but critical) piece of functionality, or have other users run into this too and have a better suggestion?

Hi,
First of all, this extension is amazing, and I really, really appreciate your efforts, however, I’ve just got a couple of quick requests that I think may improve the add-on a little.
1. Option to get rid of the icons in the status bar completely. Personally I’d never use the ‘links for you’ or ‘network reminders’ buttons so removed them, but there’s still the del.icio.us homepage link on there, and in all honesty I’d rather use the button up in the navigation bar anyway, especially as it goes right to my links.
2. Middle clicking the icon in the navigation bar opens it in a new window. Again, maybe I’m being a bit picky here, but this was present on the original extension and I found it massively useful, since I didn’t always want to close down my current tab or open a new one.
Cheers

Works. That’s good.
But there are a few usability bugs still to be tackled:
1) The key command to bookmark shift-cmd-/ does not work because it activates FF Help.
2) The delicious menu does not render properly or consistently.
3) The auto-fill when adding bookmarks doesn’t always work.
4) It does not seem to keep me logged in.

Just wanted to echo all the thank you comments here. I installed FF 3 some time ago and got rid of it due to the fact I didn’t have the same del.icio.us functionality. Now that it’s here, WOO HOO.
I’ve really come to depend on del.icio.us for keeping track of all my bookmarks and have hooked quite a few friends into it as well. It’s refreshing to have a truly useful web application. Super kudos to the del.icio.us team!
etxekalte | May 21 2008 at 5:47 am
This new addon is awesome! I only miss a feature: In Firefox when you middle-click in a folder it opens all the bookmarks in tabs, it would be great if you could middle-click in a favourite tag and open all the bookmarks in tabs too.

Hi Brandon,
We don’t currently sync Favorite Tags. Some informal surveys around the office and with users have suggested that many users want different favorite tags at home and in the office, so we’re still debating whether or not to do this.

One thing though..
For the love of all that is del.icio.us, PLEASE remove (or provide an option to remove) that annoying “cookies enabled/disabled” pop-up that shows up every single damn time I load firefox. I can’t put into words how annoying it truly is.

Nice idea, but not as good as the boomarklet that took you to a page on delicious. Why? You can’t cut and paste! There was nothing better than clicking on the tags that match your existing ones, but then pasting some (or all) of the “popular tags” into the notes so that you would have better chances to find it when searching. This is better than adding all the popular tags to your tag pool, because doing so would cause it to grow too large

I completely agree with @Chris Bumpkin. The forced delicious icon in the statusbar is unnecessary. I see the icon every time I press command-d; it’s not necessary to further shove it down my throat.
Thanks so much for finally making this an official FF3 plugin. You’re doing great work!
rickworks | May 31 2008 at 5:18 pm
Good lord, what happened to the simplicity of the first plugin? Why the hell would I want the icon in the right of the status bar when I’ve already got it in the headbar? And you would think that you would give the option to hijack the bookmark shortcut. That is ridiculous. I use delicious constantly, but I would appreciate the option to use it to use it WHEN I want to use it.
Oh and by the way, I actually do appreciate all the hard work in its development. I’m just cranky.
Britta Gustafson | Jun 1 2008 at 1:02 am
Rickworks: This plugin includes a “classic” mode for people who prefer to have minimal buttons and no bookmark syncing. We know that the whole-browser integration makes sense to a lot of people, but not everybody — it all depends on how you use Delicious, which varies widely from person to person.
Everybody: Thanks for all the feedback, including the comments about the status icons and the cookie notification. We’re listening while we continue to work on the plugin.

frank | Jun 10 2008 at 2:10 pm
Nick thanks for allowing the final status bar icon to be removable.
BUT WHY does the officially released addon (.58) still have problems with cookies, this is a bad bug that should’ve been fixed, you had lots of users comment about this flaw. Not all users have globally allowed cookies, we do have delicious.com and del.icio.us allowed though!!!! It really messes with the saved session.

Britta Gustafson | Jun 21 2008 at 12:33 am
mfhayward, jmhart, fbcallicoat, and others: Try updating the add-on and letting it sync again. Seems like your issues may have happened during the period when a ton of people were upgrading to Firefox 3 and syncing their new Delicious Firefox add-ons, so our system was a little strained. Things should be better now.
rach: Do you have the updated add-on installed? If not, go to https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/3615 and install it - you’ll get the “TAG” button back at the top of your browser.
Tommy | Jun 21 2008 at 4:44 am
Perhaps it’s just me, but after “successfully” installing the add-on, complete with tag button etc on a subsequent restart of firefox - the buttons didn’t even appear. Subsequent attempts at re-installing the add-on do not work. Am I missing something obvious? Using Vista….

Britta Gustafson | Jun 22 2008 at 12:35 am

Each time I try to install the del.icio.us extension using Firefox 3 and Linux (Ubuntu) whenever I get to the part where I log into my account it stalls there. I can see my account, I do log in successfully but I can’t continue the install. My only choices are to cancel *and* uninstall or continue which as I said stops at the log in part. It did it for Firefox 3 beta and also Firefox 3 final.
Sam Jones | Jun 22 2008 at 1:34 pm
Syncing is failing for me, I am running FF3 and add version 2.0.64
I have tried uninstall / re install and enable / disable
I want to sync up my existing bookmarks and then do a “full sync” to get down my delicious bookmarks.
On a side note, is anyone using this with stumbleupon where now it adds bookmarks to a stumblefolder when you thumbs up someething, and is that working well?
Britta Gustafson | Jun 23 2008 at 1:57 am
Lisa: You can hide the Delicious toolbar. Go to View -> Toolbars -> “Delicious Toolbar”.
leo: Is it possible that when you’re using your neighbor’s network, you’re getting a weaker signal? The sync may fail because your connection is slower and it times out.
dhughes: I don’t think we’ve figured out yet what causes that issue, but you might want to try this user’s workaround for now.
Sam Jones: Do you have several thousand bookmarks? Syncing can be unreliable with large accounts (we’re working on this).

What’s with you all?
An 8 folders deep window, *with a scroll-bar*?
I have hundreds and hundreds of bookmarks. How the heck can I locate the folder to place the bookmark in if I cannot see where the containing folder it needs to go in is, unless I spend 3 hours playing Poirot in a TINY WINDOW????? The old version was EXPANDABLE!
THAT’s ALL YOU NEED TO DO!! MAKE IT EXPANDABLE!!!
I CAN’T BELEIVE THEY DID THIS - IT’S A MICROSOFT MISTAKE FOR PITYS SAKE.
Good grief!
It’s 2008 - not 1988. SOMEONE PLEASE TELL THEM.
Katy | Jun 27 2008 at 1:00 pm
Thank you, Britta. I ended up finding out why they disappeared, because I managed to do it again. I got a new computer right as FF 3.0 went live and was installing a fresh copy of FF 3.0, not upgrading. So, I was manually importing my previous FF bookmarks. The delicious icons disappear after that process. I had to do that process twice because I imported the wrong set of bookmarks (!!!???) the first time. I un-installed delicious and re-installed and everything was back. Next time I will follow your advice. Thanks again.

Seems like on FF3 the Delicious sidebar doesnt automatically focus on the search field like It did before.
I mean, to go to a bookmark I need to:
1) Click on the first icon on the top to open the sidebar
2) Click on the search field (to give it focus)
3) THEN type what I want
Is this a FF3 bug? Is this planned?
Other than that, Delicious+FFaddon rulez :)
Thank you!

The extension 2.0.64 is not working on my system. I’m using Firefox 3.0 on Mac OS X 10.5.4. The extension installed succefully, but it won’t add my bookmark to del.icio.us. It does not remember my del.icio.us password either, each time I launch Firefox, it ask me to login.
Hope a new version of this extension is coming soon, otherwise I’ll have to find another Bookmark online solution.

Wonderful add-on, but one little thing keeps me from adding bookmarks via the extension… I still use the javascript bookmark in the bookmark toolbar most of the times because there I can see the tags I’ve already used! In some cases (when I know exactly which tags to add) cmd + D is quick & easy, but in most cases with cmd + D I just have to think way too long of which tags to add. Having a list of tags in that dialog aswell would be a wonderful add.
Britta Gustafson | Jul 6 2008 at 7:58 pm
sublimerator: Weird. I’ll ask around to find out what might be going wrong.
Anouk: Thanks for the input. We’ve heard that from some other users too, so it’s something we’re thinking about.
:( | Jul 8 2008 at 9:11 am
I just installed this extension and was dissatisfied with the process. I didn’t want to enable syncing, but I ended up doing so because a) the setup wizard seemed to imply that my pre-existing Firefox bookmarks would be erased if I didn’t sync immediately, and b) the wizard didn’t indicate Classic Mode even existed, let alone allowing me to turn it on during setup.
(I only bothered to install this extension because I just upgraded to ‘fox 3 and was hoping this one would meet my minimum needs while I wait for the next version of del.icio.us Complete.)
(Complaints about this extension aside, I love del.icio.us itself! Thanks!)
Britta Gustafson | Jul 8 2008 at 2:03 pm
We’re working on adding the option for Classic Mode to the wizard.
Jeff | Jul 9 2008 at 8:17 am
The ctrl+shift+y for “Jump to Tag” overrides my ctrl+shift+y for the Firefox Web Developer plugin. Please add an option to toggle this on/off in the del.icio.us plugin options!
Britta Gustafson | Jul 9 2008 at 1:45 pm
Jeff: We’ve heard some complaints about this, and here’s a workaround for now: http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/delicious-firefox-extension/message/2810
Mark | Jul 11 2008 at 9:06 am
Yes, I keep getting sync failed. Only at one computer. The other one is Vista and it’s fine. Both FF3 with Latest updated Delicious plugin.
Darren Y | Jul 23 2008 at 1:23 pm
So it appears to be “logging out” quite often, such as when I close the browser, or some time has passed. And re-logging in takes a while, especially to tag a page (adds 14-17 seconds on my core 2 duo to a tag use case).
It would be wonderful if we could have a setting like “stay logged into deli.cio.us Firefox Add-On” or something.
Britta Gustafson | Jul 23 2008 at 3:29 pm
Darren Y: What version of the add-on are you using? That sounds like a bug we think we fixed in 2.0.72.
Michael Finocchiaro | Jul 29 2008 at 1:05 am
I imported all my bookmarks but had lots of old, outdated folders that were subsequently converted to tags. I saw in the del.icio.us GUI that tags have to be deleted one by one. Is there no way or tool out there to delete multiple tags in one fell swoop? I have probably 200 tags or more that I want to delete and would like a check list and delete button. any help or ideas?

I finally discovered the new keyboard shortcut to Save a New Bookmark! In the old Firefox add-on (before v3.01), the shortcut was CTRL + SHIFT + /
The new keyboard shortcut (in classic mode) is CTRL + SHIFT + L
I hope this helps everyone else who’s been frustrated by this oversight. I still haven’t seen the Delicious people dedicate a page to a list of all the new keyboard shortcuts in Firefox 3, which is disappointing.

THANK YOU JOHN CURRAN!!
i had actually just googled for “i like the old delcious add on better”, just for that reason. first link was this page. most recent comment on the page was yours. shazzam. problem solved.
Art Westin | Aug 1 2008 at 5:12 pm
Sync-ing is worthless, IMHO. Please don’t release brain dead software! I have over 6000 bookmarks. A little testing goes a long way…. I was seriously starting to consider dumping Delicious permanently after using it successfully for the last few years.
Fortunately I finally figured out how to choose Classic mode.
Britta Gustafson | Aug 1 2008 at 6:26 pm
John Curran: Yeah, we should probably make that information easier to find — thanks!
Art Westin: The add-on will soon include an option in the install wizard for Classic Mode, so that people don’t ever have to sync if they don’t want to.
dani0010 | Aug 1 2008 at 7:23 pm
But when you use Classic mode in Firefox, the CTRL+D shortcut stops bringing up the Delicious Save Bookmark dialog and reverts to the Firefox Add Bookmark dialog. Why do I have to be willing to sync to have the integrated add bookmark?
Couldn’t agree more about the absolute worthlessness of syncing, and classic mode is not a sufficient substitute for the old version.
druzil | Aug 5 2008 at 1:13 am

Hello Folks,
I love your toolbar so much that it is actually the killer toolbar for firefox browser. My hunt for a good bookmarking method ended with you guys but still there are a couple of things which are annoying and some which need enhancement. Please respond by providing an update. Here is the list:
1) The keyword field for any bookmark appears only when you click on a the ‘tag icon’ the second time. (I use the latest firefox and delicious toolbar). It should appear in the first click itself. For some people the keyword field doesn’t show at all. :(
2) We should be able to save more than one keyword. e.g. if there is a website on international date line and time zones, then we should be able to save the keywords as timezone and IDline. ie typing either of these would take us to the correct page. Currently it supports only one keyword per page. This is very important as we might use some other keyword if we open the site after many weeks or months and if we think it is something else than what it is, we get our search-page opened and we have to literally search for the bookmark again, which is very frustrating…
3) The toolbar should alert us if we try to save a keyword which is already used. Eg if we save timezone for another website, it should open the other bookmark which has this keyword in another window in edit mode so that we can change the keyword in either of the two bookmarks.
4) Could you please extend your awesome toolbar for the Safari browser?
5) Could you please make a version for the iPhone. It has a big screen and already many companies like ebay and facebook are providing their services on the iphone. I am sure you will be a hit there also.
6) Keep posting videos of your updates on youtube, It is so much easier to see a video of what is new, rather than read tech specs. End users would love to ’see’ what is new.
Hope you will forward this to your developers.
Best regards,
Sli1ilm.

So I know this is an old entry, but I thought I’d add this because I don’t know where else to send this to.
I’d like to see a firefox add-on that would show me how many people have a delicious bookmarked the page I’m currently looking at. It would be a relevancy gauge of sorts.
I’ve been wanting this for YEARS and have yet to find this extension anywhere. Am I just missing this, and if not, is it something you could work on?

I upgraded and the one thing I noticed is that I now get pop up (under) ads every time i use it - this includes my homepage - which us MY OWN site, which has NO popup ads of it’s own - which mean sthey are most definitely coming from FF :(not a happy surprise.
Britta Gustafson | Aug 26 2008 at 4:47 pm
Sli1ilm: Thanks for the detailed suggestions! It’s always helpful for us to hear what people are interested in.
alon g: This is something we’re thinking about! For now, you might want to try Shareaholic; it’s a Firefox add-on that can display number of Delicious saves with you click it.
Christopher HEYWOOD: Delicious should remember you for two weeks at a time; if you’re using the bookmarklet buttons, try logging in from the main login page. Also, if you are logged out, you don’t have to register a new account — you can re-use your existing account. If you don’t remember the username and password, you can retrieve it with our reset password tool.
kim: The Delicious add-on does not include ads of any kind. Is it possible you installed something else around the same time?
erik | Aug 28 2008 at 5:15 am
I seem to be having a problem across multiple computers where my ‘favorite tags’ aren’t saved in the delicious toolbar - so I can’t use my fancy firefox:toolbar tags anymore to get to the sites that I want to get to all the time.
Is this a known quantity? A conflict with something else? Help?
Jason | Aug 28 2008 at 12:33 pm
I’ve got the same problem as erik - in linux and in windows, firefox 3.0.1, delicious extension 2.0.95. ‘Favorite tags’ just doesn’t work.
When I try to add one, it shows up in the list, but after clicking ‘okay’, the tag doesn’t show up and opening the dialog again shows that the tag was in fact not added.
That said, I’m really pleased with del.icio.us and the extension in general, so I echo muhabbet’s praise.
erik | Aug 29 2008 at 4:32 am
Jason and I are running the same version of both FF and the delicious plugin - exact same thing happening. Glad to see I’m not alone.
Upfuse | Aug 29 2008 at 10:35 am
Great to see Delicious now works in FF3. I’ve been waiting for this. Thanks for the info.
Simone | Aug 29 2008 at 10:14 pm
I’m just wondering… will del.icio.us for FF3 always stay in beta mode or will there be an official release anytime soon? I haven’t switched from FF2 to FF3 yet because of the missing del.icio.us add-on and every time FF reminds me to update, I get the error message that del.icio.us won’t work with FF3 any more.
Frankly spoken, I’m not willing to play around with a beta version if a release version will be out soon - which I sincerely hope.
Britta Gustafson | Aug 30 2008 at 12:41 am
erik and Jason: These are known issues. We currently have a test update available (2.0.99) which fixes them; see this post on the Firefox add-on mailing list for details.
Simone: We have a release out now (see this later post), and you may want to install the 2.0.99 version linked above.

I used Google bookmarks for quite awhile, found them very helpful for traveling. Then I tried delicious. Remarkable! Searchability in the extreme.
And the newest Firefox GUI is beautiful. (The labels handler mysteriously vanishes from the toolbar when I “customize” but comes back when I restart FF.) I use it regularly on my Windows machines.
On my MBP, though, Webkit is blazing fast, and I may use delicious only to set bookmarks and to visit the site: no interactive tag drop-down. So sad. (I’m a cheapo, not willing to buy the $10 product available.) Ah well…

I don’t know what you’ve done or why you’ve done it, but I really HATE the changes your are making.
Why do I have to constantly sign in? What a nuisance.
Why do I have a separation between my tag cloud and content?
Why did you change the UI — and why does it feel impossible to go back to the old UI?
I don’t want to engage more with you. I just want a shorthand way to get to sources of content and blogs that I find useful.
And if you want me to engage more with you, then please make sure you are super useful, super easy and not a super nuisance. That used to be the case, and now you’ve wrecked it.
Johan Dahl | Nov 28 2008 at 7:13 am
I keep getting this message when opening Firefox:
You have just signed out of Delicious
Leave copies of your Delicious bookmarks in Firefox
Remove all copies of your Delicious bookmarks from Firefox
Whenever you sign in again all your Delicious bookmarks will be synced and downloaded back into Firefox
Is there any way to make my choice final? I want to leave copies of my Delicious bookmark in Firefox.

Is it me, or is the latest firefox extension overriding my livebookmark behaviour?!? Seems so, as when I turn the add on off, I get the settings that I’ve configured in firefox (to use google reader for rss feeds), but if the delicious extension is on, when I click on the rss feeed icon in the URL box, I only get “add to delicious” options.
As far as I can tell, there’s no option to turn off this (intrusive and annoying) behaviour.
Am I going to have to abandone this extension because of the unconfigurable intrusion?
Britta Gustafson | Dec 18 2008 at 10:29 am
Robert E Smith: Hmm, I’m using Delicious Bookmarks 2.1.018 too, and clicking the little blue RSS icon gives me both “Subscribe to X” and and “Add X as Live Bookmark in Delicious”.
That would definitely be a bug though. Can you give me a few more details about your system (version of FIrefox, operating system, and the names of other add-ons), so I can try to reproduce this? We had a few reports of this recently from Linux users — see this mailing list thread — and I can follow up on the issue.

I just want Delicious out of my system. It says if I go to classic mode I loose the bookmarks on my computer. I want to keep bookmarks on my computer it is the ones out there in firefox land that I want rid of. How do I do it?
daslaber | Jan 7 2009 at 9:45 am
This is sweet, but please PLEASE add an option to sort by bundles, then by frequency/alphabetic in the sidebar, not just the toolbar… there are some of us that actually use the bundles feature, you know.
Britta Gustafson | Jan 11 2009 at 7:01 pm
Wm. McQuillen: If you choose “Classic mode”, you’ll see just the bookmarks that you have on your computer, and your Delicious bookmarks will be stored only on the site. If you have bookmarks in Delicious that you’d like to put into Firefox, go to Settings → Export and then import the file into Firefox. Then you can delete your Delicious account if you like (from Settings → Delete Account) and only use Firefox.
daslaber: Thanks for the suggestion! I believe we’re thinking about putting bundles in the sidebar in useful ways.

This blog wins the award for the most uses of the word “annoying”. Hello? That should tell you something. Here’s something annoying. Instead of hyperlinking “down load it here” in throughout the posts, as in “Click the “download it here” link in this blog post. That will get you a new version of the extension that works with Firefox 3.”, readers have to go find “download it here”, which will now appear at least five more times, none of which are hyperlinked.WHERE IS IT! 1) the delicious window that comes up after clicking “Tag” has a URL that is not the site I am viewing (i.e. the one that I want to bookmark
(or)
2) the delicious window that comes up after clicking the “Tag” button produces the the correct URL, I tag it and when it saves to my bookmarks it saves as RESTRICTED every time. .
I’m using Firefox version 3.0.5
How do I correct these problems
thanks

Britta Gustafson | Feb 5 2009 at 7:02 am
Blaise: What version of the Delicious add-on are you using? (You can check this from the Tools → Add-ons panel.) I’d first try uninstalling it and reinstalling it. If that doesn’t help, what other add-ons do you have installed? It sounds like there could be a weird conflict somewhere.
Until we get this figured out, you might want to install and use the simple bookmarklet buttons in order to successfully save bookmarks.

I’m very disappointed wih delicious. At the same time, I love it.
I’ll tell you why….
I love it, it;s amazing, does everythng great and works brill, apart from one thing. And that’s a simple thing that FF and Chrome do no probs. I want to be able to show my single fav links on the toolbar, as well as folders. Not just eother or. e.g. I’ll have links to Twitter, MSN etc in tChrome toolbar, and then I’ll also have a web resources folder which drops down when i click on it with loads of linsk it in. Firefox and Chrome do this, why doesn’t Delicious??
I’ve only had this one night but I can’t find any option for it . It’s either Bookmaks view or fav tags view, when really there should definitely be a mixture of both option. We should be able to drag folder and links together int he tollbar and move them about.
Please tell me this is possible,, or it’s going to be?
Andrew
AndrewM | Mar 20 2009 at 8:43 pm
Plus we have to start typing a tag when we save, click again etc. licking once with the option of the folder we are saving to is what we want.

If you want to import your Delicious bookmarks into Firefox 3, and use the native FF bookmark management system (instead of this plugin), you can also convert them using the free tool at http://delicious.e-accent.com
AndrewM: that might offer a kind of solution to what you’re asking.
Chris | Jul 9 2009 at 9:47 am
I just installed the Delicious Firefox addon, and so far I am impressed. Delicious seems to be very promising for the future of web browsing. I have just one question/suggestion. Is it possible to show your subscriptions on the toolbar? Right now I have it set to “Favorite Tags View”, giving me easy-to-navigate drop down menus of my favorite sites. However, it would be nice if I could also have one of those menus be one of my subscriptions, to see what bookmarks are being added for a particular tag by other people.
Thanks!
Chris | Jul 9 2009 at 9:54 am
Also, it would be nice if there was a way to search for people to add to your network, based on your friends in Facebook or contacts on Gmail or something. So far it looks like I can only add people if I know what their username is, which is not entirely helpful.
Chris | Jul 9 2009 at 10:04 am
Okay, I figured out a workaround for the subscriptions. If you add it to the “live bookmarks” in firefox using RSS, you can add it to the “bookmarks toolbar”, then combine the bookmarks toolbar with the delicious toolbar. Takes a few steps, but is worth it. I do think there should be a tutorial in the help section for this though.
