Internet Explorer and del.icio.us

Today, I’m happy to announce an early beta release of an Internet Explorer version of our del.icio.us bookmarks extension. For the first time our Internet Explorer users will enjoy most of the best features of our new Firefox extension. We’re very excited about this release, as we have many users who use Internet Explorer as their primary browser. Since there are some differences between Internet Explorer and Firefox, the two versions are not exactly the same, but you’ll find many of the same great features like the del.icio.us Sidebar and Toolbar. Here’s an overview of the IE features.

  • Near instantaneous searching with very large accounts (over 10K bookmarks)
  • Full del.icio.us sidebar and toolbar implementation with bookmark sync and typedown search
  • Toolbar indicators for new network activity and links for you
  • Works on IE6, IE7, and IE8 beta on both XP and Vista

Interested? Download it here.

Since this release is so new, we’ve also created a Yahoo! Group for downloading and discussing the Internet Explorer release. Go to http://groups.yahoo.com/group/delicious-ie-extension to sign up. In the group we’ll gather your feedback and share the release notes for each version. We’ve been using it every day in the del.icio.us tagmines for a few months now, but that doesn’t mean that we’ve found all the bugs. Just like the Firefox 3 release, many of the features and interface choices are experimental and may change before we officially launch. As always, we’re eager to hear your feedback on the add-on.

In other news, we’re all humbled by the large and positive reaction to our Firefox 3 beta extension release announcement a couple of weeks ago. Thanks to everyone who tried our extension out, especially those who submitted bugs. This feedback is enormously helpful as we work towards a final release of that extension.

Senior Product Manager, del.icio.us

Slow down, del.icio.us. I was getting comfortable with the lack of updates and progress on improving the service. Why, it was only Sept. 6 when you promised a new UI and search engine. At this new breakneck pace of yours we’ll be forced to enjoy improvements by the start of 2009. Please, ease us in more slowly. ;-)

    Great news!

I use both firefox and IE on different machines. Since I am relying on delicious for all my bookmarks and toolbars, I am very happy that now it’s available on IE.

    Thanks,
    R.

    P.S.:
    Some suggestions:
    - FavIcons in toolbars (favorite tags) would be great
    - Adding favorite tags: autocomple like in FF

del.icio.us is still buggy as hell. Paging links are disabled on bookmark pages for individual tags, and bookmarks disappear from those pages after being modified.

Please fix the bugs in the core functionality before branching out to side projects. Or roll out the long-promised new version which supposedly fixes these bugs once and for all.

    A couple of problems:

    a) the sidebar and the ability to tag does not work for non-admin accounts. They do appear for administrators but for those of us who are smart enough to run as non-admins for every day surfing, the main features of this extension don’t work.

    b) there is no uninstall feature for this. I really would appreciate knowing about this before installing it so that I don’t have to go around in the registry to rip the plugin out of my machine.

Other than that, it looks good.

  • Helena  |  May 17 2008 at 2:15 pm

Thanks Nick! I am glad to hear it is not you, I will complain to the Opera folks now. I really really miss the features and I only now notice how much I used them.

  • Joe Beaulaurier  |  May 17 2008 at 3:39 pm

del.icio.us is becoming one of my “can’t use the Internet without” tools.

That being said, it is truly astounding to see people get all high-and-mighty regarding how it is not living up to their expectations. It’s a free service folks. If you don’t like it then don’t use it. Threatening a hunger-strike is only going to save you money on your food budget.

As for Opera/Maxthon/Safari users, if I were leading the development team at del.icio.us (which obviously I’m not), I would spend time making my applications work for the small minority of you using those tools only if it were convenient and fit into my current development path.

People using FF are the very same technically enabled audience who were the early adopters with del.icio.us. It makes sense to build out to suit them first. Now del.icio.us is preparing to reach out to the masses on IE. The product development path for this application makes a lot of sense so far.

  • Chris  |  May 18 2008 at 10:44 am

    Hi Nick,

I’m one of the “very large users”, with 20’s of thousands of bookmarks. It seems like the sync restarts every time I open IE, and only those bookmarks that have synced would show up. This implies that I would need to keep IE open for 2+ hours in order to take advantage of my existing tags - is this true or am I doing something wrong?

I love the tool, have been using it for years - glad to see you’re keeping up with the great value that was added pre-Yahoo.

I’d appreciate you letting me know if my issue is really an issue or just user error - thanks!!

    Chris

    Hi Chris,

What you see should not be happening- have you waited for the sync to complete before restarting IE? Conceivably you might see issues if you restart IE while the sync is in progress. We also made some server refinements to make things better for power users. Let me know, thanks!

    -n.

  • Chris  |  May 19 2008 at 5:24 pm

    Nick,

I’m not sure, but I think I may have isolated my resources getting sucked up down to the new Delicious functionality. My battery truly lasts maybe 30 minutes (typically 3 hours) if I’ve got IE open the last couple of days. Would anything in the recent changes possibly be causing this (including maybe synching efforts)? I’d really like to know a way to just turn off the synching for now and be able to use IE with the good old Delicious tag tool, without killing my resources.

Also, in terms of the server refinements and cancelling out before sync is complete, I’ve noticed it seems to cycle and then restart itself (i.e., it will get up to about 6000 tags synched and then reset to 0 and start over). Also, it often gets up to some number (for example, 10800 currently) and then just get “stuck”.

Any tips or assistance is appreciated. Thanks!

    Chris

  • Angusf  |  May 20 2008 at 3:33 pm

I have the same issue as Chris above
And a similar issue with the Firefox extension

With 40+ bookmarks I’ve found it impossible to use either extension.

IE extension seems to stall syncing at 5600 bookmarks (I left it open over night twice now, same figure in the morning)
Syncing seems to restart when i open IE & as it takes so long and is incomplete this is a problem.
There is no clear indication in the UI that anything is happening during syncing.

I’ve tried the Firefox extension several times in the past (including the one in the last post - but have never managed to load all bookmarks & tags.

Could be user error, if so though something is wrong with the UI :-)

    Hi Nick,

I really appreciate the del.icio.us toolbar for IE. Unforunately I’m stuck with this browser at work (would love Firefox, but corporate says absolutely not), so I’m VERY glad you don’t ignore this user base!

Right around the time that this new toolbar was released, I started getting an error with the Post page (from both my toolbar and by going to it from my user page). My anti-virus, McAfee, says that there is a trojan (”JS/Exploit-BO.gen”) with the temporary internet file delicious.old.js. I’ve deleted this file multiple times, restarted IE and the computer and I still get the warning. I guess it’s because this file is downloaded every time the post page is accessed?

I’m suprised no one else has had this issue. Any idea what could be causing it? Is it just a hyper-sensetive anti-virus or were there updates to this file for the new toolbar?

  • Kitty Wooley  |  May 21 2008 at 12:47 pm

I’m getting the same message from McAfee (Detection: JS/Exploit-BO.gen (Virus)), and as a result I can no longer see my tag cloud. This makes del.icio.us much less interesting or useful to me. Help!

  • LaurenMarie - Creative Curio  |  May 21 2008 at 1:40 pm

If other people w/ McAfee are getting this problem, it must be McAfee. I’m glad to see it’s not just me, though. It’s a pretty scary error to receive!!

Nick and delicious team: is there any way you can fix it?

  • Tanuki  |  May 21 2008 at 1:43 pm

Same JS/Exploit problem here, according to our IT. They’ve been tracking it down to computers all over the institution and are NOT HAPPY. I just hope they won’t use it as a way to shut down our access to del.icio.us.

    Virus: “JS/Exploit-BO.gen” found!
    URL: http://del.icio.us/ui/static/delicious.old.js?v=61E-123

  • Britta Gustafson  |  May 21 2008 at 2:33 pm

That message is related to a recent McAfee release — there’s apparently some similarity between the benign del.icio.us javascript and a trojan horse. But there’s no security problem on our end, and we’re working to resolve the issue of the message popping up.

  • Kitty Wooley  |  May 21 2008 at 5:17 pm

Hey Britta, I deleted my del.icio.us toolbar and then ran McAfee virus scan to remove the trojan horse. Now I’ve opened del.icio.us and I can see my tag cloud again - joy!!! The toolbar is handy, but I’m going to wait a few days before I reinstall it, because I really need the vacation time to work on my tagging and can’t afford the down time messing about with trojan horses. I wonder if the trojan horse was somehow attaching itself to the del.icio.us toolbar?

  • Morten Meyer  |  May 21 2008 at 10:09 pm

I love the fact that the 255 characters max is enforced. Maybe you could make it a counter instead of just a block.

The smaller icons are great too and the fact that they now dont need a tool bar of their own is also wonderful.

  • Chris Graham  |  May 22 2008 at 12:26 am

I have downloaded the beta version for Internet explorer 7 and I am having problems. When I add a bookmark to a tab, it is displayed in the right tag along with another tag I dont want it to be in. So effectivly it is placing a bookmark in two seperate tags but I only want it in one. I double checked in my account that I havent put a bookmark in two tags by mistake but I havent. Does anyone else have this problem?

Hmm this new IE tag button doesnt seem to populate the notes field with text selections anymore, whats up with that ?

  • LaurenMarie - Creative Curio  |  May 22 2008 at 2:21 pm

Well I posted to my Delicious a few times today and didn’t get the error. When I logged into my computer today it said something about those files, but I’ve seen errors for it so many times in the past few days that I didn’t bother reading it. Maybe it said it was fixed successfully?

If this was an effort on the part of the Delicious team, I really thank you for the speed at which the problem was addressed. If McAfee updated their definitions, well, that’s cool, too. I’d rather give the credit to Delicious though :)

  • savara  |  May 26 2008 at 5:07 am

Latest version of IE plugin breaks bookmark sidebar behavior.

REPRO: Install IE tools from del.icio.us, open bookmark sidebar (just click on the “star”, so it drops down), middle-click on a link. Drop-down closes. Without del.icio.us tools, it does not close, which is a correct behaviour.

Thus with del.icio.us tools installed you cannot open multiple links from the bookmarks dropdown with middle clicks.

Second issue, no “small icons” for icons on the toolbar.
