Filter and browse
Now that we’ve gotten some housework out of the way, we’ve been able to spend the first few weeks of 2010 finishing off some new features and correcting some long term annoyances. We think you’ll enjoy these, a lot!
Bookmark Display options
The Delicious bookmark display options were spread all over the page and subsequently there was more than one place to control how you view your content. So we combined them all and placed them to the right of the Tagbar, just beneath the bookmark count.
Privacy filter: This has been requested so many times and unfortunately put on the back burner in place of other features. We figured it was time for it to finally hit the streets. You can now filter your bookmarks by Only Private or Only Public.
Send recipients: (display of for:, @twitter & email addresses): The community is clearly divided on whether or not they want this information displayed or not, so we decided to give you the ability to ‘show’ or ‘hide’ that information. If you don’t want to see the history of who you’ve sent bookmarks to, you can hide them.
Open bookmarks in: Something else that both you and the Delicious team have been divided on. Should bookmarks open in the same window or a new tab? Well, we thought we’d let you decide want you want to do.
Tag options
Somewhat related to Bookmark Options, we also moved the ‘Tag Options’ out of the blue action box and moved it to the sidebar where the tags are actually listed. Here you get the same functionality as before, it’s just closer to the tags.
Browse these bookmarks
We’ve created a new feature that saves you the trouble of bouncing back and forth from Delicious when viewing more than one bookmark in a row.
Click the new link in the action in the upper right hand corner of a users page to see it in action
The feature opens the first bookmark and displays a small frame at the top of the page. From here you can paginate forwards through the bookmarks.
We’re still working on the feature and more functionality will be added over the coming months, but based on how useful we’ve found it, we wanted to give you a chance to start using it sooner rather than later. We’d love to get your feedback on this feature and suggestions for other features. We know what we want to add to it, but your responses will help us gauge what we should work on adding next.
Beyond these features we’ve improved the tag management functionality on our mobile site and while you might not notice the changes, we also fixed 50+ other minor bugs here and there.
What next?
There are a few long outstanding pet peeves that we want to get addressed before we tackle some of the larger projects planned for 2010. There will also be some more tweaks to current functionality that give better access to the great content we all help generate everyday, not to mention the ability to look up and connect to other friends that use Delicious. All of this we hope to give you before the end of March, plus a few other benefits we know you’ll love, but can’t spill the beans on just yet.
Keep bookmarking!
Simon

Good stuff, thanks.
Regarding the “browse these bookmarks” Interesting indeed. However I have recently be spoiled by googles “fast flip”. I hate to do this but hope you will try imagine how your “browse these bookmarks” would feel if it had “fast flip”.
To me it’s like driving a bicycle or a sports car. In short I think the browse experience can be better if it “flips’.
Thanks again for the continues improvements and happy new year.
Chris&hellip | Jan 29 2010 at 7:50 am
Interesting idea Bart. This works great if you only want to browse that exact page, rather than navigate within it (we saw this as more useful for browsing your morning news sites, for example), but the fast flip is very nice. We’ll no doubt have some lengthy discussions along those lines :)

This is great. Thanks for showing us the improvements you’ve been working on. The Browse bookmarks feature sounds so great.
There’s a feature that I’d love to see working and that is send to group.
I usually send bookmarks using the delicious service to other users but I hate having to select each user when I want to send the bookmark to multiple people. It would be great if we could make groups to include delicious users. Is there anything currently that does this?

I really like “Browse these bookmarks”. It’s like a mini toolbar w/out having to install anything. Works nicely with Chrome.

I look forward to seeing what you put out on the Firefox extension front. I’ll bet the Browse feature would work great as an extension feature; I know some webmasters hate having their sites shown in 3rd party frames.
I hope your extension will be developed to be friendlier to members who are certain they want to keep using Firefox bookmarks in addition to Delicious bookmarks.

Awesome, I very like the browsing tool! It’s so easy to browse trough my and other people bookmarks, instead of thousands of tabs, isn’t it? Of course, I think there are a few features that would be great with e. g. it’s a bit lazy, when someone browse trough prev & next buttons. I mean a feature like dropdown menus, where you can choose from could increase the usability a lot.
dreamyshade&hellip | Jan 30 2010 at 1:10 am
Ooh, great work everyone! It’s awesome to see those new display options. I wonder if you might want to add a note about them to the Settings pages, just in case people look there when they want to open links in new tabs? And the Browse feature seems to be confused by my “color” bookmark, but I think fixing that can definitely wait for a later release. :)

Any plans to move the individual bookmark tags to the left side of the screen below the bookmark title? Having to constantly scan left and right across the screen as you move down the book marks is a pain. I used to be able to just scan down the left side of the screen to read my subscriptions or network updates and get a sense of what a bookmark was about. My usage of delicious subs and network has dropped off a lot since you guys introduced the new UI. Adding the timestamps back would help as well.

can i suggest something?
a “fix in top” feature… so we can fix a bookmaker in the top list of its tag..
it will be great because many times o go to a tag only to spend time searching 2 or 3 sites i always enter… i wish to put they above all the other bookmakers in that tag, so i dont need to search anymore..
sorry for the poor english i hope y understand me, LoL..

Several years ago, I started to develop a feed power presentation tool that took a delicious RSS feed and allowed someone giving a presentation to click through a set of bookmarked sites using a tool very much like the browse bar.
I also added a few extra features – the ability to splash the URL of the “siteshow” to an audience using a minified URL, so they could follow along; and the ability for audience members to synch the state of a show running in their browser with that of the person giving the presentation. (I never did the auto-synch bit though.)
I think the code has rotted by now – if I get a chance I’ll try to reimplement it – but it showed one possible way of developing the approach further in a presentation sense. If you want any more details, please feel free to get in touch (no obligation etc etc) :-)
There are a couple of example links from:
http://ouseful.wordpress.com/2010/02/08/browse-links-in-delicious-another-ouseful-prototype-unprediction-comes-true/
Also searching for “ouseful feedshow” should turn up various blog posts that detail the evolution of the idea as I saw it.
