We passed our two millionth user signup at the beginning of this month. Because we’ve been very busy keeping up with the load, we didn’t have time to come up with something up to our normally high standard of wit (I was going to refer to server smoke but it seems I did that last time) so here is a cat picture I found on the internet.

Because we don’t all get together enough and talk about important nerd topics, we and our Yahoo! compatriots have started a series of microconferences, entitled confab.yahoo, which will be open to all and be held in the evenings and early in the week (so you don’t have the excuse of needing to go to important parties).
The first in this series, on Dec 13 at 5:30pm, is a discussion on Prediction Markets, moderated by James Surowiecki. Please sign up and join me next week.
A prediction market is like a stock market for ideas or information.
The market rewards good information whether it comes from elites or the
masses. Prediction markets have built a track record of besting pundits
and pollsters when it comes to predicting everything from political
elections to quarterly sales figures.
From the announcement:
Join us for a public “how to” session on prediction markets1 moderated by James Surowiecki, New Yorker columnist and best-selling author of The Wisdom of Crowds.
Bo Cowgill from Google, Leslie Fine from HP, Todd Proebsting from Microsoft, and Dave Pennock from Yahoo! will describe how they are using prediction markets to aid corporate forecasting and decision making.
Other speakers include Chris Hibbert, the developer of Zocalo, an open source prediction market platform; Adam Siegel, the co-founder of InklingMarkets.com, a Paul Graham yCombinator startup, and Robin Hanson, the visionary economist and inventor whose pioneering work paved the way.
The event will emphasize practical lessons and hands-on advice. After brief presentations from each speaker, Surowiecki will open up the session for discussion with the audience.

It’s hiring season again at del.icio.us, and we’re looking to bring a few more engineers on board at our cushy Santa Clara offices. If you are a PHP god, javascript hacker, a database wizard, a UI guru, or a uber C++ ninja, let us know. As the team is so small, entrepreneurial spirit and willingness to learn new things are also a requirement. Finally, enthusiasm for del.icio.us is a BIG plus, as we’re a small team where everyone has a voice and the chance to affect the direction of the product.
Perks are vast and too numerous to spell out here, but include a team t-shirt, a formidable supply of stickers and bookmarks, infinite coffee, and the opportunity to learn a lot, have fun, drink infinite coffee, and change the world. Please send your resume to jobs@del.icio.us along with a cover letter describing why you think you’d be a great addition to the team.

Not even a week after turning three, del.icio.us has just passed the mark of 1 million registered users! That’s more than triple the number of users we had just nine months ago. We can hardly believe it ourselves (although the smell of smoke coming from the server rack seems to eerily confirm it). Thanks to each and every one of you for making all this possible. Now we have one more thing to celebrate at the party next week…

We’re pretty excited that we’ve reached the ripe old age of 3, and think it’s worth celebrating. So as promised, the del.icio.us bash will be on October 3 at Yahoo! HQ in Sunnyvale. Of course, we’ll all be there, and we’ll have food and swag in abundance.
If you’re in the area, you don’t really have a good excuse not to go- with great food, great company, and the lush ambiance of the Yahoo! Headquarters in Sunnyvale, what’s not to love? Please RSVP on Upcoming.org, so we know exactly how much del.icio.usness to bring to the party.
See you there!
PS- For those of you who don’t know me, I’m the new guy. I just joined as a product manager (and occasional events planner) and I’m really excited to be here!

The del.icio.us help pages are suddenly far more extensive and useful! They were getting a bit out of date, so I updated them and added much more detail. Explore them, learn something new, and let me know if there’s anything more I should include; the pages are still a work in progress.
Here’s one to start with: what is del.icio.us, anyway? And even if you’re already familiar with del.icio.us, here are a couple sections you might want to check out: the FAQs (full of real questions from users, not just things that I guessed you might be wondering) and neat unofficial tools (a gentle introduction to some of the most popular ones).
There is an amazing amount of community documentation about del.icio.us: people blogging and talking about features and uses, explaining this sometimes-mysterious site to everyone else. My goal is to supplement all of that with more explanations in a place that’s easy to find. I hope you enjoy it.

Del.icio.us is three years old today! It’s started making friends and will hopefully be out of diapers soon.
For those of you in the Bay Area, we’re planning a birthday bash for early October - keep an eye out!

Along with our usual round of backend upgrades, patches, and bugfixes, we’ve released a new frontpage design that incorporates feedback and ideas from our previous design. The main change is that we’ve added thumbnails for the top links on the hotlist. We’ve also started showing popular tags again, which we think is a
great way to find interesting new links. What do you think?

As we mentioned back in May, we have a newer, shinier secure version of the del.icio.us API that everyone should be using now. As promised, the time has come to say goodbye to the old version. We’ll be redirecting all queries to it to the secure server starting tomorrow, August 9.
Most scripts shouldn’t break, as modern connection libraries will handle the redirect appropriately. However, for your security, you should still use the new URLs directly rather than relying on the redirects.
We have lots of plans for the delicious API, so keep an eye out!

Hello world - I’m Les Orchard. I’ve been a long-time fan and user of del.icio.us, developer of del.icio.us mash-ups, and recent author of Hacking del.icio.us. The obvious next step in this evolution is to be fully assimilated into the del.icio.us cube. So as of this week I have joined the del.icio.us team out in sunny California.
Dealing with a cross-country move and new employee orientation, my head’s still spinning faster than my hard drive platters. But, very shortly, I’ll be pitching in to help enhance and expand del.icio.us. I’m hoping to make use of lessons I picked up in writing my last book, as well as any other tricks I’ve stuffed into my head over the years. I’m not allowed to talk about all the ultra-awesome stuff on the horizon, but I can say that I’m geeked to be here!
