now serving: 1,000,000

Not even a week after turning three, del.icio.us has just passed the mark of 1 million registered users! That’s more than triple the number of users we had just nine months ago. We can hardly believe it ourselves (although the smell of smoke coming from the server rack seems to eerily confirm it). Thanks to each and every one of you for making all this possible. Now we have one more thing to celebrate at the party next week

come to our slightly belated birthday party!

We’re pretty excited that we’ve reached the ripe old age of 3, and think it’s worth celebrating. So as promised, the del.icio.us bash will be on October 3 at Yahoo! HQ in Sunnyvale. Of course, we’ll all be there, and we’ll have food and swag in abundance.

If you’re in the area, you don’t really have a good excuse not to go- with great food, great company, and the lush ambiance of the Yahoo! Headquarters in Sunnyvale, what’s not to love? Please RSVP on Upcoming.org, so we know exactly how much del.icio.usness to bring to the party.

See you there!

PS- For those of you who don’t know me, I’m the new guy. I just joined as a product manager (and occasional events planner) and I’m really excited to be here!

double helping

The del.icio.us help pages are suddenly far more extensive and useful! They were getting a bit out of date, so I updated them and added much more detail. Explore them, learn something new, and let me know if there’s anything more I should include; the pages are still a work in progress.

Here’s one to start with: what is del.icio.us, anyway? And even if you’re already familiar with del.icio.us, here are a couple sections you might want to check out: the FAQs (full of real questions from users, not just things that I guessed you might be wondering) and neat unofficial tools (a gentle introduction to some of the most popular ones).

There is an amazing amount of community documentation about del.icio.us: people blogging and talking about features and uses, explaining this sometimes-mysterious site to everyone else. My goal is to supplement all of that with more explanations in a place that’s easy to find. I hope you enjoy it.

now with 50% more candles

Del.icio.us is three years old today! It’s started making friends and will hopefully be out of diapers soon.

For those of you in the Bay Area, we’re planning a birthday bash for early October - keep an eye out!

now with more shiny

Along with our usual round of backend upgrades, patches, and bugfixes, we’ve released a new frontpage design that incorporates feedback and ideas from our previous design. The main change is that we’ve added thumbnails for the top links on the hotlist. We’ve also started showing popular tags again, which we think is a
great way to find interesting new links. What do you think?

security (everybody feels better with)

As we mentioned back in May, we have a newer, shinier secure version of the del.icio.us API that everyone should be using now. As promised, the time has come to say goodbye to the old version. We’ll be redirecting all queries to it to the secure server starting tomorrow, August 9.

Most scripts shouldn’t break, as modern connection libraries will handle the redirect appropriately. However, for your security, you should still use the new URLs directly rather than relying on the redirects.

We have lots of plans for the delicious API, so keep an eye out!

hello world!

Hello world - I’m Les Orchard. I’ve been a long-time fan and user of del.icio.us, developer of del.icio.us mash-ups, and recent author of Hacking del.icio.us. The obvious next step in this evolution is to be fully assimilated into the del.icio.us cube. So as of this week I have joined the del.icio.us team out in sunny California.

Dealing with a cross-country move and new employee orientation, my head’s still spinning faster than my hard drive platters. But, very shortly, I’ll be pitching in to help enhance and expand del.icio.us. I’m hoping to make use of lessons I picked up in writing my last book, as well as any other tricks I’ve stuffed into my head over the years. I’m not allowed to talk about all the ultra-awesome stuff on the horizon, but I can say that I’m geeked to be here!
